Firecracker Snack Mix

Firecracker Snack Mix is an easy, no-bake snack to take to picnics, potlucks or just to snack on at home!  This mixes up in a Ziploc bag, so there’s virtually no clean-up.

2020 has been something, friends.  A lot of how we celebrate summer has changed this year, but the essence of everything we love is still there.  Sunshine, warm weather and great snacks are still on the docket and Firecracker Snack Mix is here to be a part of the fun.

We recently had friends over for a DIY drive-in movie and they brought sparklers.  Fun!  Or so I thought until my 3-year-old made everyone fear for their safety by sneaking up behind them and trying to grab the sparklers out of their hands, shouting while attempting to wave them right by people’s eyes and alternating this with trying to catch the falling sparks with his tongue.   I never thought “fraught with tension” could describe lighting up a few sparklers, but here we are.

My version of firecrackers are danger-free, and if people want to catch them with their tongues, they can go to town.  This Snack Mix takes about 5 minutes to prep, but it does need to sit overnight, so plan ahead!

Firecracker Snack Mix How-to

This is an easy-peasy how-to, and kids can definitely help.  Grab a ziploc bag, pour in your oil and spices and smoosh them around until they’re mixed.

A quick word on the red pepper flakes part of the spice mix:  feel free to adjust it up or down.  One of my kids recently described water as “spicy” so I’ve split the recipe in half and done one bag with the red pepper flakes and one without.  The 1 1/2 T is just perfect for my tastes — a little burn to make me feel alive, but not enough that I’m running for the water, but make it yours!

On cracker selection:  the sky is the limit.  I do 10 cups mixed and my favorite mix is goldfish, white cheddar Cheez-its, oyster crackers and mini Club Crackers.   The original recipe called for saltines, and that worked great too.  Feel free to mix it up with any crackers that work for you.

Add the crackers and turn the bag a few times to start the coating process.  Let them sit overnight and give them a final flip before you go to sleep.

A few of my favorite things about this recipe:  no bake, really almost nothing to clean up and a dish that isn’t reliant on maintaining a certain temperature.  I love summer celebrations, but anything that has to be kept cold is just a little bit higher stakes.  This recipe travels well, is fine to sit out and you won’t have a lot of leftovers!
