NSW Premier says getting six kids to school ‘a military operation’

Like many parents across the state, New South Wales Premier Dominic Perrottet had a big morning getting the kids back to School.

With six children and another on the way, he and his wife Helen – a legal officer for the defence force – have their hands full at home.

This morning Nine's newsreader Peter Overton joined the Perrottet family for the morning.

Mrs Perrottet told 9News getting the kids to school, preschool and organising babysitters was "definitely a military operation".

"It's a logical operation," she said.

The premier shared his skillset at home was making school lunches.

"But as Helen says – the quality of the lunch depends on the difficulty of the day," he said.

"I can pretty much wake up and read the headlines and know how many of the lunches he's going to do," Helen added.

The military operation does not stop there, with the premier admitting he does all of the normal dad duties, including dressing his kids and doing their hair.

"I got the socks wrong this morning," he said.

"With five girls you have to learn. It's all hands on deck."

The Perrottets used rapid antigen tests on their children last night, ahead of their return to school today.

Mr Perrottet said the twice-weekly testing would be in place for a month before being reviewed.

"It's not pleasant – the kids didn't enjoy it last night when they had to do it – but the focus, Peter, is to keep our kids safe," he said.

Mrs Perrottet laughed while admitting she does give her husband "feedback" on how he runs the state.

"More so in terms of feedback – rather than telling him what to do," she joked.

"I guess I've talked to him about what I've seen – the impacts on the kids with them being out of school.

"I wish I could tell him what to do."

The pair have also not ruled out having more children, with their seventh baby on the way.
