Ticket sales for the Australian Open will be capped at 50 per cent of Melbourne Park's capacity to make the world-famous event COVID-safe, the Victorian Government has announced.

However, sessions that have already sold tickets above 50 per cent of capacity prior to the announcement today will not be cut back.

The government has reassured all tickets purchased to date remain valid, with no tickets set to be cancelled or changed.

There will also be no changes made to the availability of ground pass access tickets.

Face masks will be mandatory to be worn at the Australian Open, except when eating or drinking.

Victoria's density restrictions for indoor hospitality – a limit of one person per two square metres – will also apply.

The government has advised ventilation will be improved in indoor areas of Melbourne Park, with high-efficiency particulate arrestance (HEPA) filters to be installed in some spaces.

The 2022 Australian Open is set to begin on Monday, January 17 and will end with the men's final on January 30.

A total of 812,714 spectators attended the event in 2020.
