‘Modest changes’ made to Northern Territory’s border reopening plan

The Northern Territory Government has made "modest changes" to its border reopening plan to better support tourism.

The changes come as the territory has recorded 11 cases of COVID-19 overnight, including four local cases.

Acting Chief Minister Nicole Manison said the Northern Territory government had made some "modest changes" to its reopening plan following feedback from tourism industry groups and "people on the ground" since it was announced last Thursday.

"The big things have not changed," she said.

Ms Manison said, from Monday, arrivals would be allowed to travel within Northern Territory within their first 14 days of arriving, except for within specific exclusion zones.

She said 66 "vulnerable" communities — which had a vaccination rate of less than 80 per cent for people aged over five years old — would be closed to recent arrivals who do not live in the community.

Returning residents will be allowed into the communities, and they will be allowed to return to their workplaces, but they will be subject to COVID-19 restrictions, including a mask mandate.

The government had previously announced arrivals would have to stay only within Alice Springs, Katherine or Greater Darwin, which have adequate vaccination rates.

Ms Manison said the rule change would provide better "balance".

"We listened, we took the feedback on board," she said.

The new COVID-19 cases recorded overnight include five cases from a repatriation flight from Johannesburg, all of which were in quarantine.
