Australia captain Cummins lauds Maxwell for ‘greatest ODI innings’

Australia captain Pat Cummins hailed Glenn Maxwell’s unbeaten knock of 201 as the greatest innings in 50-over cricket. Maxwell’s heroic performance led Australia to a miraculous World Cup victory against Afghanistan at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Australian team was struggling at 91-7 while chasing a target of 292. However, Maxwell’s unbeaten 201 off 128 balls, along with Cummins’ contribution of 12, formed an unbroken eighth-wicket partnership of 202. Cummins expressed his admiration for Maxwell’s incredible display, stating that he could only stand at the other end and marvel at his compatriot’s talent. Despite suffering from cramps, Maxwell continued to dominate the game, hitting 21 fours and 10 sixes. Cummins described it as a one-man show and praised Maxwell’s ability to make it look effortless. The victory not only secured Australia a spot in the World Cup semi-finals but also showcased their dominance in the tournament, having won it five times before. Cummins revealed that improving the net run rate was his primary concern when he joined Maxwell at the crease. It wasn’t until the final 20 minutes that he truly believed Australia could win. Cummins recalled thinking that if they could reach 200, their net run rate would be favorable. However, it was when Maxwell reached his century that Cummins started to believe they had a chance. With 40 balls remaining and 40 runs needed, Cummins felt confident that even if Maxwell got out, the other players could finish the job.
