Kyle Schwarber sets HR mark, Phillies down D-backs in Game 5

After the Arizona Diamondbacks won Games 3 and 4 at Chase Field to tie the National League Championship Series, Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson emphasized the need for his team to demonstrate resilience. In response, the Phillies delivered with home runs from Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, and J.T Realmuto, while Zack Wheeler performed effectively on the mound in their 6-1 victory on Saturday.

Thomson acknowledged the significance of winning a game in Arizona, especially after losing the first two games there. He praised the toughness and resiliency of the Phillies, highlighting their refusal to quit.

With a 6-0 postseason record at home, the Phillies aim to secure the NLCS and earn a spot in the World Series in Game 6 of the series, which will take place in Philadelphia.

Wheeler, who previously won Game 1 of the series, continued to stifle the Diamondbacks on Saturday, striking out eight batters and only allowing one walk.

Despite having baserunners in five of the first six innings, the Diamondbacks failed to score against Wheeler.

Wheeler emphasized the importance of preventing the home team from gaining momentum and shutting down their offense to allow his team to seize the momentum.

Philadelphia quickly gained momentum by scoring two runs in the first inning, thanks to an infield single by Schwarber, followed by singles from Harper and Bryson Stott. Stott’s single drove in Schwarber, and a double steal attempt by Stott and Harper resulted in an errant throw that allowed Harper to score, giving the Phillies a 2-0 lead.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo expressed disappointment in his team’s defense against the double steal, believing that a better throw could have prevented Harper from scoring.

After allowing two runs in the first inning, Arizona starter Zac Gallen retired 12 consecutive batters.

Schwarber broke the NLCS record for most home runs with his 11th, a solo shot that traveled 461 feet. He also holds the MLB record for postseason home runs by a left-handed batter with 20.

Harper followed Schwarber’s home run with a solo shot of his own. Both Harper and Schwarber now share the record for the most postseason home runs in Phillies history with Jayson Werth, each having hit 11.

Alek Thomas cut the Phillies’ lead to 4-1 with a solo home run in the seventh inning.

Realmuto extended the Phillies’ lead with a two-run home run in the eighth inning, sealing the victory.

In summary, the Phillies displayed resilience and toughness in their 6-1 victory over the Diamondbacks, with strong performances from Wheeler, Schwarber, Harper, and Realmuto. They now have the opportunity to clinch the NLCS and advance to the World Series in Game 6.
