Australia thrash Sri Lanka to revive World Cup campaign

Australia revived their World Cup campaign with a convincing five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka. Despite previous losses to India and South Africa, Australia displayed urgency in their bowling attack, dismissing Sri Lanka for 209 runs in 44 overs. Adam Zampa played a key role, taking 4-47. Sri Lanka seemed on track to reach a score of 300 with a strong start at 157-1, but their innings derailed, resulting in a below-par total. Australia faced a small target but struggled initially, falling to 24-2. However, half-centuries from Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis, along with a quick cameo from Glenn Maxwell, guided Australia to victory with almost 15 overs to spare. This win lifted Australia from the bottom of the table to eighth place, surpassing Sri Lanka, who are yet to win a match in the tournament. Australia captain Pat Cummins expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, emphasizing their desire to return to their high standards after two losses. Sri Lanka played under a new captain, Kusal Mendis, following Dasun Shanaka’s injury. Mendis chose to bat after winning the toss, and an opening partnership of 125 runs between Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera initially supported his decision. However, David Warner’s exceptional catches, along with Cummins’ dismissal of Perera, led to a collapse in Sri Lanka’s batting order. Strong winds interrupted play, and when it resumed, Dilshan Madushanka troubled Australia with a two-wicket maiden over. Despite some contentious decisions, Australia managed to maintain their composure. Marsh’s quick fifty eased the pressure, but he eventually fell while attempting a risky second run. Marnus Labuschagne survived a caught-behind decision after a review, but was later dismissed for 40. Inglis, however, reached his fifty before getting out. Maxwell’s explosive cameo, including two sixes and four fours, and Marcus Stoinis’ six sealed the victory for Australia. Mendis acknowledged the strong start by Nissanka and Perera but admitted that the middle order struggled, stating that a score of 290-300 would have been competitive on the pitch.
