Formula One’s bottom four teams each get $20 million CapEx boost

Formula One’s bottom four teams, including Williams, Haas, Alfa Romeo/Sauber, and AlphaTauri, have received a $20 million capital expenditure boost. This increase, from $45 million to $65 million, aims to level the playing field and provide these teams with better resources. The FIA, the governing body of Formula One, announced this update to the financial regulations for the 2024 season. Meanwhile, the top three teams, Red Bull, Mercedes, and Ferrari, will receive $51 million each, an additional $6 million. The middle bracket teams, McLaren, Alpine, and Aston Martin, will have a capital expenditure allowance of $58 million each, a $13 million increase from before. Williams had previously expressed concerns about the significant gap between them and their competitors in terms of infrastructure and facilities, which couldn’t be bridged solely through a budget cap. The allocation of these allowances is based on the championship standings from 2020 to 2022. Williams boss James Vowles welcomed the increase, stating that it was a positive step for his team. He acknowledged that while it wasn’t the $100 million he had hoped for, it was a move in the right direction. Vowles also highlighted that the agreement is designed to benefit all teams, with a slope that favors those at the back rather than the front. This approach aligns with the need to improve facilities across the board.
