Chelsea’s Mia Fishel celebrated scoring her first goal with teammates as the reigning Women’s Super League champions defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at home. Meanwhile, Arsenal suffered a surprising loss to Liverpool as the season began on Sunday.
Fishel, an American striker, made an impressive debut for Chelsea by heading home a cross from Niamh Charles in the 28th minute. Charles then provided another excellent assist for Lauren James, who scored in the 51st minute to make it 2-0 for Chelsea.
Although Martha Thomas managed to score for Spurs in the 76th minute, Chelsea held on to secure all three points at Stamford Bridge.
In a match held at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal set a new WSL crowd record of 54,115 spectators. However, the majority of fans left disappointed as Miri Taylor’s goal gave Liverpool a surprising 1-0 victory. This win was particularly unexpected since Liverpool failed to secure a single away win last season. The previous attendance record of 47,367 was also set at the Emirates when Arsenal defeated Tottenham 4-0 in September 2022.
Earlier in the day, Manchester United came from behind to defeat Aston Villa 2-1. All the goals were scored after Villa’s Kirsty Hanson was sent off in the 74th minute.
Despite Leila Ouahabi’s sending-off, Manchester City comfortably won 2-0 against West Ham United. Additionally, Elisabeth Terland scored twice as Brighton & Hove Albion secured a 2-1 victory over Everton.
Newly-promoted Bristol City, who got the opening goal through Carrie Jones, experienced a tough start to the season as they were defeated 4-2 at home by Leicester City, who finished 10th in the league last term.
In summary, Mia Fishel’s goal marked a successful start for Chelsea, while Arsenal’s loss to Liverpool was a surprising outcome. The opening weekend also saw victories for Manchester United, Manchester City, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Leicester City.
