Confident Kenin continues resurgence by reaching Guadalajara semis

Sofia Kenin of the U.S. celebrated her victory over Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the quarterfinals of the Guadalajara Open. Kenin, a former Australian Open champion, reached back-to-back semifinals for the first time since 2019 with a 6-4 6-7(6) 6-1 win.

After her triumph at the 2020 Australian Open, Kenin climbed to a career-high ranking of number four in the world. However, injuries, illness, and off-court issues caused her ranking to drop to 235 last year. Nevertheless, the determined 24-year-old has made an impressive comeback, currently sitting at number 53 in the world rankings. She is now aiming for her first trophy of the season and sixth overall, following her recent loss in the final of the San Diego Open.

Kenin expressed her happiness and pride in her performance, stating that her hard work is paying off. She is eager to reach her first WTA 1000 final and believes that confidence is crucial for her success.

In the semifinals, Kenin will face Caroline Dolehide, the American world number 111. Dolehide saved four match points to defeat Martina Trevisan and reach her first Tour-level semifinal. Dolehide credited her coach’s advice and her own determination for her victory.

Caroline Garcia, the third seed, had a convincing win over two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka, with a score of 6-3 6-4. Garcia saved all 11 breakpoints she faced and expressed gratitude for her strong serve.

Garcia will meet Maria Sakkari, the second seed and last year’s runner-up, in the semifinals. Sakkari comfortably defeated Emiliana Arango with a score of 6-3 6-4.

The Guadalajara Open continues to showcase intense competition and impressive performances from the players.
