James will be ready if England call, says Chelsea manager Hayes

England forward Lauren James, who served a two-match ban, will be ready to play in the Women’s World Cup final against Spain if selected, according to her club manager at Chelsea, Emma Hayes. Despite missing England’s last two matches due to a red card received in the last 16 match against Nigeria, James was one of the standout players in the tournament’s group stage. Hayes, who also manages England defenders Millie Bright and Jess Carter at Chelsea, confirmed that James is excited to be in contention for selection on Sunday. Hayes expressed her confidence in James, describing her as an outstanding player who will continue to contribute to both club and country. She also mentioned that James has moved forward from the red card incident and is eagerly anticipating the final. Hayes emphasized that all the players, including James, are prepared for whatever team coach Sarina Wiegman chooses. Hayes praised Wiegman for providing the leadership that the “golden generation” of England players needed to fulfill their potential on the global stage. She expressed certainty that the team would be ready for the final, as they have trained for years to deliver under pressure. Hayes highlighted the presence of experienced leaders in the team, such as Millie Bright, Mary Earps, Lucy Bronze, Alex Greenwood, Keira Walsh, and Rachel Daly, who know how to perform in crucial moments. While Hayes acknowledged that Spain will pose a tactical challenge by attempting to pin England into a five-back formation, she believes that England has the pace, power, and attacking threats to cause problems. She acknowledged the quality of Spain’s players, particularly Aitana Bonmati and Salma Paralluelo, but stated that she believes the two best teams have reached the final. Hayes expressed her support for England and her desire for the country to win the World Cup. When asked about the vacant position of U.S. coach following Vlatko Andonovski’s resignation, Hayes stated that she is happy at Chelsea and has no interest in the job. She praised the U.S. team and acknowledged that the tournament did not go as they had hoped, but her focus is on returning home and preparing her team for the upcoming season.
