Ukraine announced on Wednesday that it had recaptured the village of Urozhaine from Russian troops in the southeast. However, they also warned that the situation on the northeastern front was deteriorating due to Russian counter-attacks. This is the first village that Kyiv claims to have retaken since July 27, highlighting the challenge Ukraine faces in advancing through heavily mined Russian defensive lines without strong air support.

Defence Minister Hanna Maliar confirmed the liberation of Urozhaine on the Telegram messaging app, stating that Ukrainian defenders are now entrenched on the outskirts of the village. Urozhaine is one of several small rural settlements near the Mokri Yaly river that Ukraine has declared liberated since June, when they launched a counteroffensive against Russian troops who occupy parts of the south and east.
The recapture of Urozhaine brings Kyiv closer to threatening the village of Staromlynivka, which is considered a Russian stronghold in the area. Russia’s defence ministry did not confirm the loss of Urozhaine but stated that their artillery and warplanes were attacking Ukrainian forces in the area.
The recapture of Urozhaine indicates that Ukraine is continuing its offensive drive south towards the Sea of Azov, with the aim of dividing Russian occupying forces. Urozhaine is located just over 90 km from the Sea of Azov.
Meanwhile, the situation on the Kupiansk front in the northeastern region of Kharkiv is becoming more difficult. Oleksandr Syrskyi, one of Ukraine’s top generals, stated that the enemy is attempting to break through the defences of Ukrainian troops in order to blockade and capture Kupiansk. Losing Kupiansk for a second time would be a significant setback for Kyiv’s battlefield momentum.
Regional authorities have already ordered the mandatory evacuation of civilians near the Kupiansk front due to daily Russian shelling. The slow progress of Ukraine’s counteroffensive is attributed to vast Russian minefields and prepared defensive lines.
