McLaughlin dazzles to new world lead in 400 metres

Sydney Mclaughlin showcased her expertise in a different event, winning the 400 meters at the U.S. championships with a world-leading time of 48.74 seconds. This impressive performance came a year after her record-breaking victory in the 400m hurdles. Competing on the same track where she achieved her previous triumph, McLaughlin took an early lead in the race and maintained her dominance throughout.

In the 400 meters, McLaughlin was followed closely by Britton Wilson, who finished just five hundredths of a second behind her. Talitha Diggs secured third place with a time of 49.93. With this victory, McLaughlin now has the opportunity to compete in both the hurdles and the flat event at the upcoming world championships in Budapest, Hungary.

After crossing the finish line, McLaughlin expressed her determination to push herself beyond her comfort zone and become one of the greats in the sport. Although she narrowly missed breaking the U.S. record, she was thrilled to have achieved such a remarkable feat.

In the women’s 100m hurdles, Nia Ali, who had a disappointing performance at the 2022 world championships, redeemed herself by winning her first national title with a time of 12.37. Kendra Harrison, the Olympic silver medalist, finished second in 12.42. Masai Russell secured the third spot for the world championships with a time of 12.46.

Nikki Hiltz emerged as the winner in the women’s 1500m, clocking in at 4:03.10. Athing Mu, the Olympic and world champion in the 800m, finished second with a time of 4:03.44. On the men’s side, Yared Nuguse claimed victory in the 1500m with a time of 3:34.90.

Christian Coleman, who had previously finished second in the 100m final, continued to impress by advancing in the men’s 200m heats with a time of 20.06. Fred Kerley, the reigning title-holder in the 100m, also secured a spot in the 200m semi-final with a time of 20.23.

In the 110m hurdles, Grant Holloway, a two-time world champion, easily advanced from the heats with a time of 13.07. Devon Allen, a wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad, narrowly made it through with a time of 13.51.

Maggie Ewen, the world leader in women’s shot put, secured victory with a 19.92-meter throw on her final attempt. However, the reigning world champion, Chase Ealey, finished fourth with a throw of 18.62 meters.

Chris Nilsen, an Olympic and world silver medalist in pole vault, secured his place in Budapest with a leap of 5.91 meters. Sam Kendricks, a two-time world champion, narrowly missed the podium with a jump of 5.81 meters.

Rudy Winkler emerged as the winner in the men’s hammer throw with a distance of 79.04 meters on his second attempt. Curtis Thompson claimed victory in the javelin with a season-best throw of 80.92 meters.

The top three finishers in each event at the U.S. championships, who meet the qualifying standards, as well as the reigning global title-holders, will advance to the world championships. The U.S. championships will conclude on Sunday.
