Can China Support the Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire?

It is heard that US authorities have been trying to persuade Putin not to attack Ukraine for the last three months. The approach was put into action with the help of the Chinese counterparts deployed in the US. However, when Russia finally invaded Ukraine, the war was ongoing for more than a week. The question mark is how does China support the Russia-Ukraine ceasefire?

The US authorities are still trying to count China to ask Putin to stop the war.

It is understandable that the world’s largest economic power can play a vital role in the ceasefire. The reason is that the sanctions on Russia cannot be that impactful without the support of China.

Analysts assume that Chinese president Xi Jinping can only be the person who can urge Putin to review and alter his decision.

Washington is aware of the situation that happened in the past. They knew China’s role when Russia and US had the confrontation. China had always consistently chosen the path of diplomacy by considering its national benefits.

It makes sense for China to be helpful regarding Russian aggression in the same way they were before.

China is supporting the international-laws-based system of governance. In which the national-state authority deserves respect in regards to its sovereignty.

Opposing the militant aggression, China is also desired to have established diplomatic and business terms with the US. Because it has always been the necessity of time to have strong political and economic terms with neighbors and socio-economic powers.

In the same context, China has already taken steps to showcase they are not favoring Russian invades. For example, when the United Nations Security Council decided to vote for the Ukraine crisis, China abstained instead of supporting Russia.

The analysts observed this action as the loneliness of Russia internationally. In addition, the two major banks of China, the Bank of China and ICBC, announced on 25th February to limit purchasing Russian products.

The first element is distrust. China doesn’t believe in getting more than “Thanks” from the US by supporting the imitation of American strategy in the Ukraine crisis. But, on the other hand, it would be a support to more aggressive NATO in the neighborhood. And this would be the start of the anti-China allies’ construction.

Another reason that hinders China from supporting the Western allies regarding Ukraine’s crisis is the forceful use of US strategies towards China. It also includes US media and administration blames. They are just painting China with the same brush as it was for Russia for over a long time.

In terms of international relations, it is often necessary to balance conflicting powers to abstain from stepping into wars. The West needs a balance from China to have support to control the declining Russia.

Gradually, as weaker it would be, Russia would depend more on China’s economic and safety guarantees. As a result, China can ensure safety and become the mediator towards the end of the ongoing invades.
