Some jaw-droppingly good and captivating books were released this year, even though the year was marked with tragedies and uncertainties. A Good  Neighborhood is a compelling tale of different cultures, people, races, and classes mingling together, written by Therese Anne Fowler. The plot revolves around a story of an affluent family settling in a new neighborhood and demolishing the old building to build a Mansion, making everyone else suspicious. It also has a bit of romance between Valerie’s son and the new neighbor’s daughter.

Hidden Valley Road

Another non-fictional piece of work on our list is Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family. The book is written by the author of “Lost Girls,” Robert Kolker, and published by Doubleday. The Story Revolves around a family in which six out of 12 siblings were diagnosed with schizophrenia. The scribbled tale describes the constant suffering, unutterable violence, and fragments of the crashed American Dream during the ‘60s and ‘70s.

The Opposite of Fate

The Opposite of Fate is written by Alison McGhee. The book revolves around Mallie Williams, who wakes up from a coma after 18 months only to learn shocking and astonishing things, including that nothing is the same, neither her family nor the world. It is one of the best books you can read in 2020, and will be delighted to have it on your bookshelves.

Homeland Elegies by Ayad Akhtar

Homeland Elegies is a book that mingles the elements of deep intelligence and the state of the world in perfect prose. The book is a Pulitzer Prize winner and written by Ayad Akhtar. The writer meticulously writes the tale of an American Pakistani family facing the turmoil of life after the 9/11 attacks. This book depicts one truth, and that was; the American Dream was never so easy.

The Truants

The story revolves around a poor Muslim woman of Kolkata, Jivan, who comments on Facebook after witnessing a brutal terrorist attack criticizing the government’s response to the attack. Only did she think before commenting, things would have been different for her as she was accused of aiding the terrorists and taken into custody. The tale moves between three voices, and the writer amazingly reveals the mingling of their fears and ambitions, of race and class, of corruption and crime.
