Police officer dies during an illegal cockfight raid in Philippines

A rooster killed a Philippine police officer in the province of Northern Samar while raiding an illegal cockfight. The rooster’s gaff, a razor-sharp steel blade usually fixed to the leg of battling roosters, struck Lieutenant Christine Book.

The razor then sliced off his left thigh, cutting through his femoral artery. People took him to the hospital, but he died upon arrival.

Cockfighting became illegal in the Philippines during the coronavirus outbreak.

Prior to the pandemic, the government only permitted in licensed cockpits on Sundays and public holidays, as well as during local parties lasting up to three days, according to the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

Furthermore, Colonel Arnel Apud, the regional police chief, informed the AFP news agency that the incident was unfortunate. He went on to label it “a bit of bad luck that I can’t describe.”

“I couldn’t believe it when it was first mentioned to me. It’s the first time in my twenty-five years as a police officer that I lost a man because of a cockfight.”

The police chief also extended his “deepest condolences” to the family of the deceased, PNA added.

Meanwhile, the police already detained three people and also seized seven combat roosters, two gaff sets, and 550 Philippine Peso ($11; £8), said PNA. Three more suspects are at large.

In the Philippines, cockfighting is common, usually drawing large crowds who bet on the results of bird fights.

A brief history of the cockfight rooster

Cockfighting has a history that dates back to the days before Christ. However, many regarded the bird as an admirable species before it even became a sport, attracting men’s admiration. The fighting cock had become the focus of religious worship.

The ancient Syrian worshiped the fighting-cock as a god. The ancient Greeks and Romans identified the gods’ Apollo, Mercury, and Mars with the fighting-cock. Magellan stated that the bird was so holy in Borneo that no one should consume its meat.

In South Canara, the bird seemed to be warding off evil demons. People worshipped the gamecock in Sumatra — a temple dedicated to it, and ceremonies conducted to honor the god.
