Garmin global outage caused by ransomware attack, sources say

According to credible sources, an Outage has been caused at the sports tech giant Garmin by ransomware.

The incident began last Wednesday, and it continued through the weekend, which disrupted millions of online users, like Garmin Connect. It syncs the user activity to the cloud and several other devices. Moreover, the attack took down FlyGarmin, the aviation navigation planning service.

Some portions of Garmin’s website are offline right now. However, Garmin hasn’t said much about the incident so far. A banner on the company’s website states, “Currently, we are facing an outage which affects Garmin and Garmin Connect. Moreover, it is affecting our call centers, and we aren’t receiving calls, online chats, or emails. We will do our best to resolve the issue, and we apologize for the inconvenience.”

In a press statement this Saturday, Garmin stated that it did not indicate that the outage affected individual’s data, including the payment and other information.

Two sources from the company who demanded complete anonymity stated that Garmin was trying its best to bring its network online after the ransomware attack. A credible source also confirmed that the main culprit behind the ransomware was WastedLocker. Moreover, a news outlet confirmed that the outage was caused by WastedLocker.

WastedLocker is a new ransomware that is operated by a hacker group called Evil Corp. Just like other malware, WastedLocker infects the computers and locks the files of the users in exchange of a ransom.

Companies without backup have faced ransom demands as much as $10 million. The FBI has discouraged to pay the ransom related to the malware attacks.

Evil Corp has a long history of ransomware and malware attacks. However, the Treasury has put restrictions on Evil Corp for their involvement in a decade long hacking campaign.

According to Brett Callow, a ransomware expert, these sanctions have a lot of complexities for U.S. companies that deal with WastedLocker infections.

Currently, all efforts to contact the hackers have been unsuccessful. The main reason is that the group uses different addresses in each ransomware note.

A Garmin spokesperson wasn’t available for comment by email or phone on Saturday. Moreover, the company hasn’t returned to Twitter.

Let’s hope that the company resolves this issue quickly, like the way NSA and Microsoft released a security patch recently.
