Waymo and Volvo partner to develop electric robotaxis

The self-driving software of Waymo is expanding, and it has recently partnered with the Volvo car group. Both the companies announced a partnership this week. They want to integrate the self-driving software into a new vehicle for ride-hailing.

Both Waymo and Volvo have given some details of the partnership and what it will look like. The two companies will work with each other to use the Waymo driver into a mobile-focused electric vehicle for ride-hailing services. The phrase that “first work together” suggests that more and better things are coming. We are well aware that the new vehicle will have level 4 autonomy, a designation by SAE, which means that it can easily handle the driving in a specific area or under specific road conditions.

The partnership also involves other subsidiaries like the Volvo Car Group. It also involves the electric performance brand, Polestar and Lynk, and Co. International.

The term “exclusivity” is also used for this partnership. However, we aren’t sure where things are.going and. Wesy, the exclusivity means. The exclusivity term describes Waymo’s self-driving software, which suggests that both companies might share sensitive information on the workings of the stack. It also indicates that the partnership will include a licensing deal.

So far, Waymo has been partnering with automakers. Mainly. Waymo handles the design of the hardware suite and the computing system. It also works with automakers to create a vehicle that integrates with the Waymo Driver. These relations mainly focus on ride-hailing applications. However, they could be customized so that the vehicles become suitable for trucking and delivery.

If the deal between both the companies becomes successful, it would be just like Waymo’s partnership with Fiat Chrysler automobiles. In 2018, FCA expanded its complete contract with Waymo to provide the car company with 62,000 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans. FCA also stated that it was looking for new ways to license the self-driving technology of Waymo to deploy the tech in cars for different consumers.

Waymo also has a partnership with the Jaguar Land Rover for around 20,000 all-electric iPace vehicles. In June 2020, Waymo started a partnership with Nissan and Renault to determine how the autonomous vehicles will work for packages in Japan.

Currently, Volvo also has a deal with the self-driving unit Uber Advanced Technology Group. Uber and Volvo have both confirmed that their partnership is still underway. In the partnership, Volvo is supplying Uber with a vehicle for autonomous driving. These XC90 vehicles contain the hardware to support Uber’s self-driving software. After that, Uber uses its self-driving stack into the vehicle. Volvo stated that currently, it has an agreement with Uber to deliver thousands of autonomous vehicles.

Around two years ago, Waymo also partnered with Walmart. Now let’s see how successful this partnership turns out to be.
