Clashes Between Migrants and Greek police at Turkish Border

The clashes at the Greek-Turkish border erupted anew on Friday as Greek police are using tear gas and water cannons at the migrants trying to cross the border forcefully.

There were reports of tear gas firing from the Turkish side to the Greek side of the border. The development came after foreign ministers of the European Union held an extraordinary meeting to discuss the situation.

After the offensive launched by Assad-regime, millions of people have been displaced.

The death of 33 Turkish soldiers in an airstrike prompted the Turkish authorities to violate the 2016 agreement and allow refugees and migrants to enter Greece.

Turkey has consistently maintained that it cannot hos more refugees, as the country currently holds 3.7 million refugees.

The deal between the EU and Turkey was signed in 2016, which allowed aid Turkey to settle the refugees. But Turkey was obliged to stop migrants from entering Greece through borders. The deal was brokered after a million refugees tried to enter Greece.

Ankara says that the EU has violated the agreement and is nor owning up the crisis. But the EU says that it is abiding by the deal, which is providing billions of euros to keep refugees at its soil.

Many refugees are forced to camp out in the open, and due to cold weather, there have been hundreds of deaths. They are stuck in between war-torn homes and closed violent Greek borders in the search for a peaceful life.

Erdogan’s Decision and EU

The decision to not stop migrants from entering Greece came after many threats by the Turkish leader. The EU is still facing fallouts of 2015 mass migration, and the announcement by the Turkish president has made them more worried.

Leaders of Russia and Turkey met on Friday and brokered a ceasefire deal, but there has been no mention of it.

The EU authorities held an unusual meeting in Croatia, to discuss the presence of thousands of migrants on the Greek border. They welcomed the ceasefire agreement and said that this would help ease the tensions at the border.

Erdogan has accused Greek authorities of cruelty with the refugees and migrants.

Ceasefire Deal

On Friday, Erdogan and Putin announced a ceasefire over Idlib. The clashes in Idlib have turned violent, and many civilian areas were destroyed by Syrian airstrikes.

Turkish soldiers have been killed in the airstrikes by the Syrian forces backed by Russia. But it has also displaced one million people.

On Thursday, after a meeting held in Moscow, both sides agreed over a ceasefire in the northern Syrian region, and the deal came to effect at midnight.

The war monitors and opposition activists reported relative calm in the region.
