The European Parliament approved Brexit on the evening of Wednesday 29th January 2020. On Wednesday evening,  621 members voted in favor, 49 against and 13 abstentions.

Brexit

Brexit is the combination of two words, ‘British’ and ‘Exit.’ It simply means the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union.

Besides, following a referendum in June 2016, in which 51.9% voted to leave, the government of the UK announced in March 2017, the withdrawal of the country. As a result, it triggered the dawn of the Brexit process.

The UK is about to leave the European Union on January 31, 2020.  After which there will be an 11-month transition period terminating on December 31, 2020. Moreover, during the period of transition from the European Union, the United Kingdom and the European Union will set-up specific terms for all future relationships.

Besides, the Eurosceptics supports the Brexit move, and it’s opposed by pro-Europeanists. However, many perceive the Eurosceptics as anti-European Unionism. This is because they seek reform to the European Union policies. The central beliefs of the Eurosceptics are that the EU comprises of elites and lacks Democratic legitimacy and transparency.

On the other hand, pro-Europeanism is a political position that supports the policies of the EU. Pro-Europeanism consists of European federalists, who seek to create a single state known informally as a United States of Europe.

The European Union is a political-economic Union of European States. The EU has developed a single internal market through a standardized system of laws. These laws apply in all member states in those matters. Only those matters where members have agreed to act as one.

The Goals of the European Union are to establish free movement of people, goods, services, and capital within the internal market. The EU’s policy also enacts legislation in justice and home affairs and maintain conventional policies on trade.

Travel within the Schengen Area is possible without passports for citizens of the Member States of the European Union. There are 26 European states in the Schengen Area. These states that have officially abolished all passports and all other types of border control at their mutual borders.

In time past all, no state has opposed being a part of the European Union. This trend, however, comes to an end in 2016 when the United Kingdom signified its intention to leave after a membership referendum. Since that time, the UK has been negotiating a withdrawal that is scheduled to occur on January 31, 2020.

The European Union Finally Approves Brexit

After several years of troubled talks and uncertainty, the UK’s 47years of membership in the EU will now end. This conclusion followed the result of the vote. With 621 in favor to 49 against and 13 abstentions of members of the European parliament.

Negotiations between the EU and the UK over the future relationship is scheduled to start on March 3, 2020. Von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, also appealed for the British prime minister. An appeal to listen to the calls of the UK’s car industry and aerospace to maintain EU standards outside the bloc.

An immediate consequence of Brexit day will be the departure of the UK’s seventy-three members of the European parliament. Which will lead to a shake up the relative size of the EU parliament’s different political forces?

The Leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats, Mr. Verhofstadt, said, ‘It’s sad to see a country leaving that twice liberated us, that twice gave its blood to liberate Europe.’

Von Der Leyen further stated that no new partnership will bring back the benefits of being part of the same union but that both sides had a duty to seek the best possible outcome.
