China, South Korea and Japan to Promote North Korea – U.S. Dialogue

China, South Korea, and Japan leaders agreed to promote North Korea – U.S. dialogue. It was agreed at the 8th trilateral leaders’ meeting held in Chengdu, China, on 24th December 2019.  The meeting held between Premier of China Li Keqiang, President of South Korea Moon Jae, and Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe. In a joint news conference after the meeting, South Korean president stated that the three countries agree to help and promote North Korea – U.S. dialogue. The initiative is an effort for peace in the Korean Peninsula. It is a common interest in the three countries.

South Korean President also stated that we agree to further communicate and cooperate for North Korea – U.S. dialogue. We will put our efforts to denuclearize and restore long-lasting peace in the Korean Peninsula. Therefore, we have decided to work together for this cause. It will come through prompt North Korea – U.S. dialogue, although China is the most important diplomatic and economic supporter of North Korea. However, Chinese Premier also confirmed their cooperation for North Korea – U.S. issues through dialogues.

At the other end, U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korea leader Kim Jong Un meetings have not resulted in any breakthrough. These meetings did not show any fruitful progress toward the resolution of the issue. Both leaders have met thrice since June 2018, but they did not come to decide any substantive solution to the problem.  North Korea is keen to the withdrawal of international sanctions first to proceed further. North Korea has asked the U.S. to change its policy of hostility. They have threatened the U.S. North Korea may test some other missiles. It will badly affect the dialogue process and U.S. President Donald Trump’s statements regarding reducing the North Korean risks.

The joint agreement may be a result of U.S. special envoy for North Korea Stephen Biegun meetings with Chinese, South Korean, and Japanese diplomats. The efforts are carried out to prevent new confrontations between the U.S. and North Korea.  China has also proposed United Nations Security Council to lift some of the international sanctions from North Korea as an attempt to break the deadlock between the U.S. and North Korea. It can help promote decisive dialogues between the two countries.

China’s role is so important to convince and promote the trilateral cooperation for North Korea – U.S. dialogue. It will be another tough situation for China to bring South Korea and Japan on a single table. South Korea and Japan have poor relations and some disputes among them. This effort has some inherent issues and favoritism for all the three countries.  China is backing North Korea. South Korea and Japan have their internal issues and disputes among them. But they all came together in this trilateral summit. In the summit, the three countries decided to promote communication and cooperation for North Korea – U.S. dialogue. Now China’s role is so important to lead the issue. China has brought South Korea, and Japan face to face in this trilateral summit, but its results are awaiting.
