The Human Rights organization based in Nigeria are those non-governmental (NGO) groups whose aim of advocating for the rights of individuals that are violated in the society voices are heard due to violations against them.

It was the need to give these people the opportunity to air their voice that gave rise to those agencies that protect the Human rights in order to seek justice for them.

Human rights in Nigeria are dully protected under the current 1999 constitution and Nigerian human rights act of 2010 as ammended. While the country has made major strides in the protection of the fundamental human rights of its citizens, there are some cases where the government failed in this regard.

An American reports stated that abuses by Boko Haram, lack of social equality, arrest of opposition, limit to freedom of speech by both individuals and the gagging of media are just a few but common violations that undermines the status of human rights in Nigeria.

The way in which these oganizations operate, involves identifying the ways these fundamental rights are being violated in the country by collating, analyzing and presenting data, public awareness and conducting institutional advocacy to those in power to put an end to human right violations.

The National Human Rights Commission of Nigeria (NHRC) was established in 1995 with backing by the United Nations General Assembly resolution that allows all member states to have an independent National Institutions which promotes, protects and enforces the rights of the ordinary individual.

The Commission is currently headed by a Chief Executive Officer who oversees the activities of the NHRC. They have offices in the 36 states you can visit if you feel that your rights are violated.
