Tornado Warning: News 9 Oklahoma Weather Radar

Tornado WarningA number of tornado warnings and watches were issued Tuesday afternoon across the state and Oklahoma City was included in a tornado watch.

A tornado watch was issued for an area along and east of Interstate 44.

A tornado warning was issued for the Ada area in southern Oklahoma Tuesday afternoon. A tornado was spotted and captured on video near Sulfur in Murray County, the weather service reported.

Oklahoma City Public Schools canceled all afternoon and evening activities because of the potential for severe weather. District officials advised people to watch for updated on social media, telephone and text messages and on the district website.

A tornado warning was issued in parts of Payne and Lincoln counties about noon and a flood watch is in effect across much of the state, including the Oklahoma City area, until 7 p.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service reported.
Oklahoma City and most of central Oklahoma is under a tornado watch until 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Meanwhile, flooding is possible, the weather service reported.

A flood warning was issued for the Cimarron River near Dover for Wednesday morning until Thursday in Kingfisher County.

A tornado warning was for southeastern Payne and northeastern Lincoln counties until 12:30 p.m. People in the Cushing area were advised to take precautions at noon, as the storm moved north, northeast.

A severe storm that was capable of producing a tornado was reported near Tryon about 11:30 a.m. Another severe storm was reported in the Ada area.

From 1 inch to 3 inches of rain is possible in parts of the state as thunderstorms with heavy rain and the risk of hail and high wind moves through the state.

Severe storms are possible near and east of Interstate 35. Storms are expected to develop in western Oklahoma Tuesday morning and move east.

The following counties are under the flood watch: Alfalfa, Blaine, Caddo, Canadian, Cleveland, Comanche, Custer, Dewey, Garfield, Grady, Grant, Greer, Harmon, Jackson, Kay, Kingfisher, Kiowa, Lincoln, Logan, Major, McClain, Noble, Oklahoma, Payne, Pottawatomie, Tillman, and Washita.

Nowata area warned of the tornado:

2:55 p.m. A tornado warning is in effect for northern Rogers, southern Nowata, and western Craig County until 3:45 p.m.

2:50 p.m. The Storm Prediction Center in Norman has four reports of tornadoes touching down in Oklahoma so far, including one in Okmulgee County. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

2:40 p.m. A tornado reportedly touched down north of Skiatook. There were no immediate reports of injuries or injury.

2:31 p.m. A tornado warning is in effect for Washington, Nowata and Rogers counties until 3:15 p.m. The warning is associated with the same storm that moved through the Skiatook area. The storm is moving northeast.

2:18 p.m. Tuesday: A tornado warning is in effect for parts of Mayes, Muskogee, Okmulgee, Rogers and Wagoner counties until 3 p.m. Coweta and Wagoner were near the storm's path.

2 p.m. Tuesday: After-school activities Tuesday are canceled for Tulsa Public Schools and Broken Arrow Public Schools. A Tulsa Public Schools spokeswoman notes that the Teacher of the Year and Support An employee of the Year banquet will go on as scheduled.

1:40 p.m. Tuesday: Severe thunderstorm warnings are active in Osage, Washington, Nowata and Pawnee counties through 2:15 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm west of Osage County was producing 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail. Wind damage is expected, NWS Tulsa said.

A tornado warning in southeastern Osage and southern Washington counties expire at 2:30 p.m.

12:55 p.m. Tuesday: Tornado warnings for Tulsa and Creek counties are no longer active. All tornado warnings in northeast Oklahoma have been allowed to expire.

12:30 p.m. Tuesday: A tornado warning has been issued for Creek, Osage, Pawnee, and Tulsa counties active through 1:15 p.m.

Noon Tuesday: A tornado warning is in effect for the area around Nowata until 12:45 p.m. Much of the eastern part of the state is under a tornado watch until 11 p.m., according to NWS Tulsa.

An enhanced risk for severe thunderstorms is in the forecast for eastern Oklahoma, according to the National Weather Service’sStorm Prediction Center in Norman.

Showers and thunderstorms developing Tuesday morning across northeast Oklahoma could be severe with large hail and heavy rainfall, according to the National Weather Service. Thunderstorms can still increase in coverage and intensity through the afternoon.

"At this time, the greatest tornado risk appears concentrated across north Texas, eastern Oklahoma, and into central Illinois beneath the low-level jet axis where shear profiles will be strongest," according to Tuesday's forecast from the storm center.

Large hail and damaging wind gusts will be initial threats with those storms, but the tornado risk will increase with any cell that lingers on its own, and a strong tornado or two could be possible.

The stronger storms will be confined to areas north of Interstate 44 and most likely west of U.S. 75, according to NWS Tulsa.

Likely timing for severe weather is noon to 4 p.m. west of U.S. 69, with Muskogee and other eastern areas to see severe weather from about 4-8 p.m.

In addition to the severe threat, heavy rainfall is expected through Wednesday with 2 to 4 inches likely to cause flash flooding. A flash flood watch is in effect through Tuesday evening for most of eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas.

The chances for today's hail, strong wind, and tornadoes goes down over the next two days after the weather center looked into three days of severe weather.

Wednesday’s severe weather threat outlook includes a slight risk stretching across eastern Oklahoma.

Wednesday night: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 59. South wind 8 to 10 mph.
Thursday: A thirty p.c probability of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 71.

Severe storms cause damage in Oklahoma:

Damage has been reported as severe storms moved across parts of Oklahoma Tuesday. One tornado touched down in southern Oklahoma.

KOCO First Alert Storm Chaser Stephen Jones captured video of a large tornado that was on the ground just east of Sulphur in southern Oklahoma. He reported seeing downed power poles in the area.

First Alert Meteorologist Michael Armstrong tracked the storms in Storm Command. He reported storm damage in the Cushing area.

Oklahoma City and Moore public schools have canceled all after school and evening activities for Tuesday because of the potential for severe weather.

And it's not over yet. A tornado watch remains in result till eleven p.m. for central and eastern Oklahoma.

A Tornado Watch means that conditions area unit favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and shut to the watch space.
