Leaving PS Plus January 2023: grab these acclaimed action RPGs while you can

Playstation Plus Essential monthly games Biomutant, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, and Divine Knockout leave the service next week.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition and Biomutant are two games Leaving PS Plus tomorrow

It’s that time of the month again when everyone hurriedly downloads all the free Monthly PS Plus Essential games they were totally going to play but forgot to.

Was it Elden Ring again? Or were you too busy playing Pokemon Scarlet/Violet or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 , to spend five minutes popping onto PS Plus to grab those free games – that will inevitably be added to the never-ending backlog of games you will definitely get around to, honest?

However, If you have a PS5 (or PS4 for that matter) and a hankering to play some of the best action RPGs ever made – and one that is a lot better than it was at launch – then you need to find a way to add these games to your library right now. Or before Tuesday, January 3 at least, because that's when they're leaving the service.

The Legendary trilogy

I am of course talking about Mass Effect Legendary Edition. This collection brings together Bioware's original trilogy of galaxy-spanning Lovecraftian Sci-Fi action RPGs in one shiny new package with all the modern bells and whistles you kids all demand; like better load times, faster frame rates, and improved lighting, textures and such. Now get off my lawn!

Anyway, if you have ever wanted to hear an alien scientist sing Gilbert and Sullivan, have a 100-hour-long, bromance with a Krogan (think John Goodman crossed with a grumpy old dinosaur), or sleep with a space racist – what are you waiting for?

But if you have a PS5 and are looking for something a little more on the wild side, there’s Biomutant. The surprisingly charming action- RPG that is best described as the post-apocalyptic love child of Fable and Sylvanian families, narrated by an inebriated David Attenborough.

When it first launched on PC, PS4 and Xbox One in 2021, reviews were mixed. Critics mostly agreed that the game had a lot of imagination and fantastic world-building, but was bogged down with performance issues. And characters spoke in annoying gibberish rather than the fun Banjo-Kazooie kind.

Although the animalistic chippering and grunting remain, the PS5 version – which you can download until Monday, January 2 on PS Plus – has fixed the technical issues, and also added all the lovely Dual Sense features ray tracing and performance modes, you’ve come to love or loathe. Divine Knockout: Founder’s Edition is also leaving PS Plus after Monday, January 2.

If you have already grabbed December’s PS Plus games, Sony has announced next month's offerings which include some mighty fine games, so you should probably click the link to find out what is in store for subscribers to PS Plus in January 2023.
