Tags: deal club january

The January transfer window is officially open, with Premier League leaders Arsenal closing in on the signing of Mykhailo Mudryk as Manchester United look to reignite their move for Frenkie de Jong

Day Two of the January transfer window is already upon us, with Premier League sides continuing to work to boost their squads.

Liverpool have already announced their first signing of the window, with Cody Gakpo arriving from PSV. But they remain in the market for a midfielder, although Jurgen Klopp has hinted he may call off that search until the summer window.

Leaders Arsenal are also set to be active, with Gabriel Jesus' injury leaving them in need of attacking reinforcements. The Gunners are thought to be closing in on bringing winger Mykhailo Mudryk in from Shakhtar Donetsk, with personal terms reportedly agreed.

Having endured a disappointing start to life under Graham Potter, Chelsea could also be active as they look to turn his reign around. Enzo Fernandez is their top target, with Benfica boss Roger Schmidt having admitted the World Cup winner could leave the Portuguese side in January.

We'll have live coverage of every Deal completed over the month, so stick with Mirror Football until the window slams shut on January 31.

De Jong's Man Utd U-turn

Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong has reportedly U-turned on his reluctance to join Manchester United.

The Dutchman was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer, but ultimately refused to join the Red Devils. Now though, Fichajes report that De Jong has 'had conversations' with United boss Erik ten Hag to 'declare his desire' to join his team.

That is said to have angered Barca, who are frustrated he has had a change of heart after refusing to leave when they most needed him to.

Chelsea's Fernandez plan

Chelsea are trying to thrash out a schedule of payments for Benfica’s World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez after refusing to be put off by his £106million price.

Chelsea are willing to dig deep to meet the star’s €120m release clause this month after he was voted best young player at the World Cup. The Portuguese giants are due to pay River Plate 25 per cent of any fee they receive for the youngster, so are keen to maximise his price.

Chelsea now believe they can sign the player and are just trying to agree a schedule of payments with Benfica for the starlet.

More on Forest's transfer plans

Steve Cooper provided more detail on Nottingham Forest's January business after his team's 1-1 draw against Chelsea on New Year's Day.

The Forest boss told Sky Sports: "I'll work day by day with the players at the training ground but I'm trusting the Club to get the work done.

"There is that sense of 'Forest signing players again' but we've picked up some long-term injuries since the summer. Jesse [Lingard] is out for a month now so we if we can add the right players in the right positions we'll do that."

One move each PL club should make

The January transfer window is notoriously a difficult period for Premier League clubs to do business in, but that does not stop big deals from being done.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have already been hard at work to seal the signature of PSV Eindhoven sensation Cody Gakpo as the Reds attempt to recover from a poor start to the season. Elsewhere, table-topping Arsenal remain linked to a clutch of players as they attempt to continue their challenge for the Premier League crown.

Slightly lower down the table, a number of the current relegation candidates will aim to add to their squads in an effort to stave off a place in the Championship next term.

With all that being said, Mirror Football takes a look at one problem position for each side and the perfect signing to solve those conundrums.

Gakpo nearly joined Man Utd and Leeds

Cody Gakpo has revealed he nearly joined Manchester United and Leeds in the summer.

The Netherlands international, 23, joined Liverpool at the end of December.

Gakpo said: "It was difficult this summer. It was a very intense period. I tried to find my peace, but it was difficult. I thought I was going to Manchester United, but in the end it didn’t work out.

"Leeds United came in. They are a good club, but I asked myself if I should really go there and when you have a lot of doubts, it is not good."

Cooper outlines Forest plans

Steve Cooper admits Nottingham Forest could sign more players in January - despite bringing in 22 new faces in the summer.

Cooper said: "What’s different between the last window and this one is Filippo Giraldi is in now as sporting director and he takes a lot of the responsibility for the transfer windows.

"I’ve been working really closely with him on a daily basis and the lines of communication are good it’s all joined-up thinking. It’s a joined-up approach, there’s no doubt. We’ve had changes in recruitment that people know about.

"Communication lines are good. But my focus is on the players who are available to train on a daily basis, ultimately, that’s what my job is."

Romelu Lukaku has confirmed he wants to stay at Inter Milan.

The Belgium international is currently on loan at Inter from Chelsea.

He told Sky in Italy: "I spoke to Chelsea about my relationship with the coach and I decided to come back to Inter. I hope to stay at Inter, Inter for me is everything. But we need to find a way with Chelsea.

Conte wants investment

Antonio Conte has urged Tottenham's board to invest in the squad after their 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa on New Year's Day.

Conte told Sky Sports: "You need to have your squad, 13 or 14 players, strong. And then every year to get one or two players, important players, to improve the quality. You need to invest £60m or £70m or £80m, in this way you improve the quality.

"In this moment we need to create a solid foundation. We don't have a solid foundation. We need to find 13 or 14 players - we're trying to create this. Then to add important players in every season. Not normal players, they don't make a difference.

"We need players that make a difference. I don't want to create illusion. The club knows very well what I think. The club is 100 per cent the same, they think the same. Maybe it's good to send this message."
