My neighbours want a pond in their garden but I refuse to let it happen in case it floods – people say I’m the problem

WE ALL want to have a good relationship with our neighbours, but that isn’t always the case.

And one woman has complained that her neighbours plan to build a wildlife pond too close to the fence next to her garden.

The neighbours were going to ask for planning permission for the pond, kitchen garden, orchard and self-made house – but she planned to object to it.

The disgruntled woman wrote on Mumsnet: “We have new neighbours who own a one-acre piece of land right behind our house.

“They are applying for planning permission to develop the land for a self-build house, orchard, and kitchen garden.

“All okay in principle. However, the permission in principle application also shows a VERY big wildlife pond which would sit three metres from our back garden boundary and only 20 metres from my kitchen.”

She added this would be an issue as she plans to build an annexe for her elderly parents, and the pond would be too close.

The woman continued: “We also want to put in an annexe for my elderly parents and the pond would be very close to them too.

“I am very concerned about this, and so plan to object. Can anyone advise on what to include in this?

“I’ve considered flooding, drought – if there’s a hosepipe ban what happens?

“What if it’s not maintained and we end up with a stagnant rat-infested s**t pit?!”

She explained: “We’re not the only people who would be affected- there are 6 other houses this would be in similarly close proximity to. Help!”

However, people on Mumsnet who took to the comments section agreed that she was the problem who should be grateful for the wildlife pond.

One wrote: “I think you sound a bit irrational about this, wildlife ponds are IME lovely, why would it be likely to end up rat-infested Your parents will get the benefit of more birds and other wildlife visitors such as dragonflies.”

Another person commented: “Yea, another one here not seeing the problem with a neighbour having a pond. You seem quite irrational about this, a pond is actually a nice feature benefitting the wildlife around you and providing birds with food and water.”

A third penned: “It sounds great. I can’t think of any reason to object.”

Meanwhile, a fourth added: “A new build considering wildlife is a very rare thing indeed and should be encouraged.”
