Dak Prescott injury update: Cowboys 'being cautious' as quarterback deals with reported 'baseball injury'

Dak Prescott wasn't on hand for the Cowboys' preseason-opening loss to the Steelers. He missed the Hall of Fame Game because of a shoulder injury and didn't travel to Canton, Ohio, with his teammates.

The Cowboys aren't concerned about Prescott, but his situation is unique. He is dealing with an injury that's more often found in baseball players, Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reports.

"They fully expect him to be the starter Week 1," Glazer said on the Fox broadcast Thursday night. "However, the injury is a different injury than most football players get. It's more of a baseball injury. In fact, it's kind of under the armpit. The Dallas Cowboys' training staff actually reached out to the Texas Rangers' training staff just for a little bit more help for them. But they fully expect him to be good for Week 1."

Prescott confirmed in a halftime interview with Fox Sports that his injury was under his shoulder. He added that he and the team are "being cautious" as he prepares for Week 1 of the regular season.

"We're taking it day by day," Prescott told Fox. "Obviously, it’s five weeks before the season opener, so I’ve got a lot of time and I'm going to use that time to get myself ready for that game."

That's part of why Prescott didn't join his teammates in Canton. He wanted to continue rehabbing at the Cowboys' training facility in Oxnard, Calif.

"I just stayed back getting myself healthy," he said. "Doing all the things necessary to get back on the field as soon as necessary with my teammates."

That the shoulder is Prescott's biggest issue right now may be good news. Prescott suffered a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle in Week 5 last season. Now 10 months removed from the injury, he says the ankle isn't a concern.

"As far as my ankle, I mean, I've done so much rehab. I've worked continuous and a lot of hours just to get myself back," he said. "I'm very confident in it. I don't think it will take any time before I'm just back out there."

"The practices that I've had, I didn't think about my ankle," Prescott added. "Now, it's just about getting my shoulder behind me."

Prescott will have until Sept. 9 — when he and the Cowboys will take on the Buccaneers in the 2021 NFL season opener — to do that.
