La Tigra National Park in Honduras Parque Nacional La Tigra
La Tigra National Park, aka Parque Nacional la Tigra, is an incredible tropical forest located about an hour outside of Tegucigalpa and is the oldest national park in Honduras. It got its name after the female Puma and is called la tigra by the locals, although considerably different than the larger tigers with stripes located in Asia and Africa.
Things to See at Parque Nacional la Tigra
This park made for a perfect day trip out of town where I hiked through the forest in the rain enjoying the completely natural surroundings made up of countless flora and fauna.
After living in big cities and on the islands in Thailand and Indonesia for the past few years I was really missing a real nature walk that only the mountains and forests like La Tigra National Park can provide.
How Much Does it Cost To Visit
La Tigra National Park costs $10 USD to enter, and people are advised to wear warmer clothing, as the high altitudes mean the climate is cooler in the park, especially at night. I was particularly happy I wore pants and a jacket with my jungle hat because it decided to rain but I was adequately prepared so it didn’t bother me at all.
The park is high up in the mountains where the weather changed quite dramatically from morning to mid-day as I explored the park hoping for a glimpse of some exotic and elusive animals. Parque Nacional La Tigra is made up of a network of 8 hiking trails through the “cloud forest”. Depending on the season, weather and timing, there’s an abundance of elusive wildlife from pumas to peccaries.
I had no such luck spotting any pumas or other animals carefully hiding away quietly from this forest intruder, but still fully enjoyed my time admiring the various plants and greenery as well as the towering trees, lichens, wild orchids, and large ferns.
How to Get to La Tigra National Park
I was originally planned on getting to La Tigra with a tour group but it turns out all the local options online required a minimum 2 person reservation for $70 USD! I ended up finding a better option from a Spanish blog post here.
Transportation to go to CV Jutiapa (La Tigra):
I ended up taking public transportation in the morning from in front of the Manuel Bonilla National Theater in Tegucigalpa. This bus ride only cost me around 30 Limperas which is only like $1 USD! It took about 1 hour to reach El Chaparro de Jutiapa Village, then I had to walk about 20 minutes to the entrance of La Tigra National Park.
Departure times: 7:00 am, 9:20 and 10:30 am, 12: 00m and 2:00 pm from Monday to Friday.
Saturday and Sunday: 8:00 am, 10:00 am, 12: 00m, 1:00 and 3:00 pm.
Return Hours:
6:00 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
