  • You want to be challenged
  • You have figured out a pain point for potential customers and believe they will pay you to receive it
  • You believe you have enough experience in an industry to make a go of it alone viable

Some examples of potential bad reasons to start a business include

  • You have your boss and you job
  • You don’t think you are paid enough
  • You want to live the “4 hour work week” lifestyle

Again, the key here is honesty -be honest with yourself and you will make the right decision

Do You Have The Right Skills To Start Your Own Business?

A lot of would-be entrepreneurs confuse wanting to do a particular field of work with wanting to start their own business.

For example, if you love to cook you may day dream about having your own restaurant.

However, being a great cook is only one piece of a having a successful restaurant – you will need to spend time managing staff and finances, ordering food and marketing.

Fail in those things and having great food is a moot point.

Make sure you have the skills – or have partners who have them – to do things like

  • Marketing
  • Delivery
  • Manage finances and staff

Are You Mentally Prepared to Start Your Own Business?

Just having a great idea is not going to cut it when starting your own business.

To create a successful business, you need to be willing to roll up your sleeves and get in the mud – the beginning entrepreneur often has to do multiple jobs.

Even if you have enough seed money to hire some staff to do some of the work, a fledging business owner still needs to know how it all ticks and be willing to put in the work.

Though in our culture we celebrate the so called “overnight success”, this is in fact a dangerous myth.

Ultimately, the decision to start your own business is an intensely personal one.

However, if you have taken a brutally honest assessment of your strengths and weaknesses and your desires versus your skills you will be in a position to make that decision.

Starting your own business is a journey fraught with ups and downs – however if done right with planning and determination the rewards are limitless!
