Qualcomm chips promise CD-quality audio for earbuds and faster 5G

Qualcomm will demonstrate some of its cutting-edge technology at Mobile World Congress to improve audio streaming and 5G connectivity.

The enhanced features – and the chips that enable them – are likely to appear in the next generation of earbuds and high-end Android phones starting in the second half of this year.

The Snapdragon X70 5G modem-RF system improves your phone’s 5G connection using an AI processor. The goal is to maximize the 5G signal for better coverage – especially with short-range mmWave signals compared to lower and mid-band signals with broader coverage.

Qualcomm says the mmWave improvement is limited to large spaces, like stadiums and city blocks, and doesn’t address mmWave’s core weakness: the signal’s inability to travel from outdoor to indoor areas. The new AI processor will also increase coverage and speeds in the sub-6GHz band, where there’s no mmWave signal.

Snapdragon Sound’s new audio features include a feature teased last year: wireless earbuds that can deliver 16-bit, lossless audio over Bluetooth.

The new technology boasts 68ms latency, which is 25 percent better than Qualcomm’s existing technology. Stereo recording is also possible via earbuds. Noise cancellation is also provided with the latest adaptive technology from the company.
