The FCC announces $1.2 billion for broadband deployment in rural areas

Through the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is funding the expansion of Broadband access in 32 states with more than $1.2 billion in the USA.

The FCC calls this round “the largest funding round to date” and notes 23 broadband providers will provide access to more than one million new customers.

Furthermore, the Federal Communications Commission has introduced the Rural Broadband Accountability Plan, which will double the amount of audits and verifications performed this year in comparison to 2021.

The FCC also needs to post information about verifications, audits, speed tests and latency tests on the Universal Service Administration Company (USAC) website.

“I am excited to announce that the new Rural Broadband Accountability Plan will streamline our audit and verification processes, as well as make the results of verifications, audits, and latency testing publicly available for the first time,” FCC chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel wrote on Twitter. “These safeguards will make sure program providers do their jobs.”

Employees worked from home, and kids attended school virtually as a result of the pandemic. During his visit to Washington in November, President Joe Biden signed off on an infrastructure package worth $1 trillion, which includes $65 billion for providing broadband access to every American household.

Late last year, the FCC also announced a program that provided less expensive internet access to low-income households.

The Federal Communications Commission awarded companies with a total of $9.2 billion under the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund in December 2020, including an $886 million subsidy for SpaceX.

Elon Musk‘s company is supposed to use satellite internet to provide service to rural areas, but the FCC warned it and other providers not to use these funds to provide service in areas with good connections.
