Divergent Series Book 2: Insurgent

Hello all,

It’s my birthday eve and so I’m going to grace you all with my second book review in two days but this is a Challenge 2020 review.

Now for Insurgent, the second book in the Divergent trilogy and sequel to Divergent. DO NOT CONTINUE READING IF YOU HAVEN’T READ DIVERGENT YET…THERE ARE SPOILERS DEARIES.

When we left Tris in Divergent, her world had been turned upside down in more ways than she could ever have imagined. Having lost her family and some of her friends along the way, Tris discovered herself and who she was but now there’s a bigger battle ahead. One that could change the lives for everyone because there are those that want the factions and there are those that do not.

“No factions? A world in which no one knows who they are or where they fit?…I imagine only chaos and isolation.”

Tris learns that her choices can transform her or destroy her and everyone around her…choices have consequences after all.

“Choices can be made again.”

Her initiation day is in tatters and now unrest surges through the factions surrounding her as conflicts between them and what they stand for grows.

“…I wore my secrets as armor until they were gone, and now everyone sees me as I really am.”

Sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge; in a time of war Tris has already survived and paid a price for that and is forever wracked by the guilt that haunts her every waking moment.

“The truth has a way of changing a person’s plans.”

New discoveries await her and her friends and new and changing relationships are constantly emerging. Throughout it all her boyfriend Tobias stands by her side, but will her choices push him further away?

“…this peace between us comes from not talking about things…I do not dare to disturb it with the truth, because I am too busy clinging to it for support.”

Tris must embrace her Divergence, now more than ever before! There is much to lose but is her life worth fighting for? Who else will fight with her? More importantly, who is willing to fight against her? She has lost so much…she is about to potentially lose so much more.

“Noise and activity are the refuges of the bereaved and the guilty.”

Insurgent is similar to Divergent but I wasn’t as hooked. With Divergent, I was hooked from start to end. With Insurgent, it took a while to get going but then when it got going, it got going! When it got to that point it was too easy to continue reading and finish the book!

This book questions everything these factions hold dear – grief and forgiveness, identity, loyalty, politics and Love. Love for each other and love for themselves. This shows a society once stable, now crumbling and dysfunctional, so far from the ideologies they once needed to function to a society thinking for themselves.

The world can be guided be politics and identity but not governed. The world needs to think for themselves, to find love, loyalty, grief and forgiveness and utilise these emotions in their armoury.

4/5 stars as I was hooked, just not as much as I was in Divergent but I still enjoyed this book and the questions it asks!

“I love Tris the Divergent, who makes decisions apart from faction loyalty, who isn’t some faction archetype. But the Tris who’s trying as hard as she can to destroy herself…I can’t love her.”

”…to remind me why I chose Dauntless in the first place: not because they are perfect, but because they are alive. Because they are free.”

”Cruelty does not make a person dishonest, the same way bravery does not make a person kind.”

”Insurgent…A person who acts in opposition to the established authority, who is not necessarily regarded as a belligerent.”

”People, I have discovered, are layers and layers of secrets. You believe you know them, that you understand them, but their motives are always hidden from you, buried in their own hearts. You will never know them, but sometimes you decide to trust them.”
