Expert advocates use of blockchain technology by farmers

Mrs Genevieve Leveille, the Chief Executive Officer, Agriledger,  a social enterprise, has advocated the use of blockchain Technology by farmers in Nigeria to monitor the delivery and sale of their produce.

Leveille said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday that Blockchain Technology would enhance tranquility and transparency in product pricing.

Authors of the book, “Blockchain Revolution (2016)’’ – Don & Alex Tapscott – defined blockchain as an incorruptible digital ledger of economic transactions that can be programmed to record not just financial transactions but virtually everything of value.

Leveille listed three vital areas in farming which  Agriledger, using the blockchain technology, could help to monitor and address as supply, delivery, and sales.

The Agriledger is a social enterprise using distributed ledger technology and mobile apps for agricultural producers.

“With blockchain technology, farmers can monitor the delivery of their products and their money while someone else is delivering.

“Blockchain is disrupting the supply chain, and this is actually very good news.

“Also, the buyer can monitor how much of what he paid for produce gets to a farmer, thereby helping to give possible assistance to the farmer.

“Imagine a world where, within seconds, one knows how much of what one pays goes into production,’’ she said.

According to her, with  Agriledger, the farmer can have step-on-step information on how much is being paid and who is making much money on produce.

The chief executive officer said that a farmer would not necessarily need to be educated to have access to technology that could ease his work.

“Haiti, where I come from, is the same as Nigeria. Most Haiti farmers are uneducated, yet they have successfully adopted the use of blockchain technology,’’ Leveille said.

She said that the most important asset for farmers in adopting the technology would be the ability to communicate with their phones.

She said that blockchain, also known as the distributive technology, was incorruptible and safe from online fraud, adding that the technology was encrypted.

The blockchain expert said that the encryption was a layer of animosity or protection that kept the data safe from competitors.

Leveille said that the social enterprise, through the World Bank, was making it possible for farmers to adopt the technology.
