The Happy Prince, Ralph Breaks The Internet, Detective Pikachu – Movie Reviews

The original plan for this post was to be a review of the movie The Happy Prince which I saw a few weeks ago. However, by the time I got to writing it I saw two other interesting movies which I want to talk about so I decided to combine the topics in one post and briefly review all three films at once. At least this way I won’t get carried away and I will (hopefully) keep things short and simple for each one of them. I hope you enjoy the post and I hope it helps you decide on the next movie you want to see! And yes, it will be spoiler free, worry not.

The Happy Prince

Short story summary: The movie is the untold story of the last days of Oscar Wilde – a figure who lived, suffered, and died for love. The movie explores a journey through the memories of the author, his regrets, his passion, and his unfortunate mistreatment by the society which once worshiped him. A heartfelt real story which comes to life and exposes the dark and unpleasant world of Wilde.

The first movie I want to talk about and the reason behind this post is a powerful and engaging biographical drama about one of the best authors the world has seen. A noteworthy thing about the movie is that Rupert Everett directed, wrote, and starred in the movie himself which made it an incredibly coherent and consistent movie in terms of storyline, filming, and acting.

To be honest, I knew the most popular facts about Oscar Wilde like his imprisonment and troubling affairs but The Happy Prince showed me the life and story of the author in it’s (almost) complete and brutally raw form. This was a great experience and it definitely made me understand the author way better and try to see his perspective with justified thoughts and actions. And one thing I can guarantee – the life of Oscar Wilde is worth looking into, he is not only a great writer but a very interesting figure with a life which is more than turbulent. The movie is without a doubt one of the best historical movies I have seen and the splendid acting and masterful filming made it even better. The only thing to note is that a big part of the movie is in French so be sure to have the adequate subtitles loaded (or speak fluent French) otherwise you might miss some important and relevant conversations. The Happy Prince is a must see if you are interested in the life of Wilde and it is a great movie in general.

Why it’s worth seeing

  • The movie shows the life and struggles of Oscar Wilde in an unfiltered and attention-grabbing way. It is constructed and directed in a beautiful way with a great insight into the actual life of Wilde and it represents historical facts in a captivating and understandable way.
  • Great attention to detail in terms of filming, accuracy of real-life events, and witty references to the works and famous quotes of the author.
  • Filming and acting are on top-level and make it easy to immerse into the world of the author.
  • The relevant attention is given to the important figures in Wilde’s life including his wife Constance, Reggie Turner, and Alfred Douglas – all people who significantly affected the author’s life.

Ralph Breaks The Internet

Short story summary: Six years after the events in Wreck-It-Ralph the wheel of the Sugar Rush arcade breaks and Ralph and Vanellope embark on a quest to get a replacement by using the newly installed Wi-Fi router. This leads to countless adventures, fun moments, intense chases, and memorable lessons about friendship.

Yes, I am aware this is a children’s movie. But are you aware of how f*cking good it is?! No, honestly I was blown away by this one, probably because I didn’t at all expect such depth, real-life metaphors and incredible resemblance to everyday situations which everyone encounters sooner or later. Ralph Breaks The Internet is the perfect movie for a family movie night – it is super entertaining and captivating for kids and it has the subtle and highly relevant references and metaphors for real life which adults will appreciate.

The storyline is actually quite compelling and filled with various intense and fun moments. The animation is on the highest level with great attention to detail which only makes it a better movie. Plus the funny and creative interpretations of the popular websites we use daily and how things work inside the internet – this will definitely make you laugh and be amazed by the amount of work that has been put into the movie.

Why it’s worth seeing

  • A funny and playful movie which has incredible depth and relevancy when it comes to real life problems and situations.
  • Great animation and attention to detail as well as voice acting.
  • Countless references to real life and witty jokes for kids and adults.
  • Engaging storyline and super fun characters with plenty of development and several plot twists.

Detective Pikachu

Short story summary: Ryme City is a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side. When the ace detective Harry Goodman dies in a car crash his son Tim is forced to arrive in the city and collect his father’s legacy. However, Tim meets a Pikachu with a memory loss who knows only one thing for certain – Harry Goodman is not dead. The unlikely duo decides to investigate further and entangle themselves with puzzling hints and events which lead to an exciting adventure.

Hell yes, I have been waiting for this movie ever since I found out it is in the making. If you personally know me, you are well aware of how much of a Pokemon fangirl I am and my excitement won’t baffle you at all.

I grew up with Pokemon and when I was a kid I was fantasizing about how great and colorful a world where Pokemon and humans live in unison would be. With the development of technology the world of Pokemon slowly but surely became more and more realistic and tangible. Pokemon GO took us out of the regular type of Nintendo games and brought the interesting creatures directly into our world. Now, with Detective Pikachu we can finally see how an actual world where those creatures exist would look and function like. The advance of CGI and various animation techniques make it as real as it gets.

If you are a fan of Pokemon you don’t even need to consider if you should watch this or not – the movie is an absolute must see. The Pokemon come to life in an incredibly vivid and powerful way – hyper-realism makes the likes of Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and other all-time favorites insanely cute and the spectacular voice acting enhances the experience to the maximum. The storyline of the movie is also not so bad and even if you take out of the Pokemon context the movie is quite a catch. Lots of plot twists (it is supposed to be a mystery after all), surprisingly good character development, tonnes of references to the Pokemon world, and great acting make it a great film to kill an hour and forty-five minutes with. Not to mention the spectacular performance of Ryan Reynolds – this guy is one of the best actors in our days and he proves it once again with the incredibly specific role of detective Pikachu.

The movie is insanely funny, entertaining, and intense and I totally recommend it whether or not you like Pokemon!

Why it’s worth seeing

  • Good storyline and great development.
  • Interesting and unique characters.
  • Pokemon come to life with incredibly good animation and special effects and their personalities and traits are very accurately depicted.
  • Super fun and cute representation of detective Pikachu by the master actor Ryan Reynolds.
  • Great soundtrack and voice acting which makes Pokemon even more lively.
  • A combination of great comedy and intense moments.

Sorry Pikachu, but Psyduck was the cutest Pokemon in the movie

I hope you enjoyed this post and thanks a lot for reading it till the end! Those three movies were super enjoyable for me and I hope you manage to find one (or more) of your liking and have a great time seeing it. Each of them has its charm and noteworthy aspects.
