Disenchantment, Riverdale, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina – Series Impressions

Suddenly finding myself with lots of time on my hands I naturally used it wisely and spend it watching lots of series. Yes, I am ashamed, however, I decided to give you my impressions of the three most recent (and worth talking about) TV shows I came across and completed.

Disenchantment

One of the best and most hilarious adult animations I have seen

Short story summary: Princess Tiabeanie (‘Bean’) is sick of her boring and restricting life as a princess of Dreamland. The mundane life has let her become a rather outspoken lady with a serious drinking problem. Her life is finally about to get more fun and interesting when her “personal demon” Luci appears and an elf who is trying to escape his destiny makes an entrance into Dreamland.

Disenchantment is an adult animation sitcom and it honestly made me laugh out loud, get tense, and contemplate on my life choices (all in one episode). It is indeed not for everyone’s taste and you need a specific type of sense of humor to be able to fully enjoy it but if it fits your taste you are up for a treat.

The mastermind behind the Netflix original is no other but Matt Groening. If the name doesn’t ring a bell (shame on you, what have you been doing with your childhood!?) this is the guy who created The Simpsons and Futurama. His style of art and subtle satire and self-irony is visible all throughout Disenchantment itself and I have to say it is another splendid and well-polished work of his.

The show is simply hilarious and during the course of the ten episodes, the focus is mostly on the humor, funny situations, and ingenious real-life references. There are also several really serious moments and tense situations leaving you on the edge of your seat which is admirable for an animation sitcom. The characters are one of the best and most colorful ones I have seen in any show starting with a princess who has serious drinking problems and going all the way to an unhappy and extremely dense elf who wants to live a miserable life. The storyline might not be a very complex one but it serves its purpose of having some exciting moments to keep you entertained while being packed with lively events which will put a smile on your face no matter what. The animation is needless to say on top level and it will definitely bring you back to your childhood and make you enjoy the attention to detail and the countless hidden jokes.

Disenchantment is definitely a great piece of art and something which I wholeheartedly recommend in case you want to take it easy after a busy and stressful day. It will transport you into the most ridiculous medieval world there is and you will easily forget about all your worries after seeing what Princess Tiabeanie,Elfo, and even Luci have to deal with daily. If you pay enough attention you will most likely crack some smiles at the witty jokes as well, it’s worth the shot for sure.

Riverdale

I honestly don’t know how much work you have to put into making something with such great potential turn into completely ridiculous series

Short story summary: Archie Andrews and his friends live in the town of Riverdale where they are trying to navigate and find their way in the complex life of teenagers entering early adulthood. Apart from all the complex relationships with friends and family they soon have to come face to face with the dark and dangerous secrets of the town and do their best to protect it.

When Riverdale premiered in 2015 I was quite impressed by the well-written story, right amount of mystery, action, and necessary drama and romance. It was a great series which I followed with excitement eager to find out what would happen at the end and I would be surprised with something I didn’t expect. A great start which gradually got worse with the next two season piquing with the most ridiculous and absurd 3rd season which completely destroyed the potential of the series.

Yes, I am aware this is a teen drama series but this doesn’t mean it has to be the worst possible writing bereaved of any logical development. Riverdale started off great with a very interesting, mysterious, and complex storyline which developed in an amazing way satisfying viewers and making you appreciate the thought put into the script. It had everything – extremely interesting characters, various relationships including romance, secrets which would motivate you to keep watching, and a very specific type of vibe created by the amazing filming. There are two things that I still highly look up to – one of them is the actors who do their absolute best to give the series some kind of standards, it is obvious they take their roles extremely seriously and they manage to portray the characters in an incredibly realistic way. The second good thing which stayed with all three seasons is the filming – it is just a delight for your eyes and it fits the atmosphere which the show is going for perfectly well. Another good point I would give to Riverdale is the character development for the majoirty of main characters and some supporting ones – this is worth mentioning since I find it of utmost importance for the progress of any type of series.

I know I gave way too much hate to the direction the series is going but I am really pissed off since I was truly impressed by the first season and things just keep going downhill lately. Of course, Riverdale still has its charm – the dark mystery world is worth exploring and if you don’t mind excessive amounts of drama and a not-so-logical turn of events then it’s worth a shot. The amount of “plot twists” and crime mysteries is definitely huge so in case you like those kinds of things go for it without hesitation.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

A reboot which I was very skeptical about and turned out to be quite a catch

Short story summary: At her 16th birthday Sabrina Spellman – a half-witch has to choose if she is going to take the ‘dark’ path of witchcraft or stay a mortal and live a normal human life. There seem to be more people, and other creatures, interested in her choice apart from her aunts and a secret seems to be hidden about Sabrina‘s parents and her own past. Her choices will affect both the mortal and the witching world more than she suspects.

If you grew up in the 2000’s you are most likely familiar with the first Sabrina TV series starring the stunning Melissa Joan Hart. Sabrina The Teenage Witch was a super funny and entertaining sitcom which was something I truly enjoyed whenever I caught it playing on TV. The 2018 reboot of the series gives a whole new different light to the bewitching world of Sabrina and instead of being a light comedy, it shows the terrifying horror side of being a witch and dealing with demons.

At first, I had more of a negative mindset towards the series. Nowadays, people are so out of ideas they reboot everything that had some success in the past. I grew up with the sarcastic and funny Sabrina and the talking Salem who was the funniest character I had seen. A horror perspective of the same show was really different and it had to be executed flawlessly in order to work well.

I was pleasantly surprised by The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Kiernan Shipka does an incredible job portraying the character and I was happy to see that there was a lot of thought and original storyline development put into the series. The charm of Sabrina is intact and the new storyline is exciting and filled with terror. There are lots of moments dealing with topics like gender equality and feminism which is admirable but sometimes a bit overwhelming, however, it is all well mixed up into the storyline in a way which makes sense. The story itself is intense with lots of development and character progress for almost each and every figure present. Elements of mythologic, religious (Christianity), and occult figures are well fitted into the story to make it more interesting and it definitely worked for me. Unexecpred development was also present in order not to make the series too dull and predictable and a fair amount of humor and romance is also included to enhance the experience. I loved the first two seasons and I am looking forward to seeing what the writers come up with next, you have my recommendation for the series if you like horror, magic, and adventure genres.

Have you seen those shows? What are your thoughts? What have you been watching recently?

I hope you enjoyed this post and in the best case, you found something new to check out. Thanks for reading!
