Your Weekly Music Fix #2

Yet another week filled with awesome music has passed. I couldn’t stop myself and I decided to make another post sharing my music discoveries for the week. Some were made thanks to my music guru friends, others by myself thanks to the magical algorithm of YouTube recommendations and Spotify playlists. I hope you find something you like and I hope you enjoy this type of posts!

Seriously, this post is sponsored by my music guru friends. I couldn’t have discovered even half of the music on my own and I would probably be still listening to the same stuff if people didn’t send me songs or didn’t share them publicly. So thank you for that!

Another idea which was not mine, but to one of those music gurus and definitely my top contributor was to make a playlist with the songs of the week. This way anyone who reads the posts (or doesn’t want to read my rambling but wants to hear the music) can easily find the tracks. So I made a playlist in Spotify and one in YouTube where you can hear the songs that made an impression on me during the week (I am also adding songs which I haven’t talked about in the blog but I enjoyed in general). I will be changing the playlist every Sunday with the new songs I find. I hope you enjoy it, you can view this as a source of new music every week so I recommend you follow the Weekly Music Fix playlist in your favorite platform look at me marketing my playlists.

1. Grandson – Blood//Water

Another one of the countless examples of artists who I have been seeing way too often in my recommendations and around social media. Grandson has been making lots of noise recently and I am once again late with checking his stuff out and I fucking regret it.

I got easily addicted to his music, I have been abusing his Spotify playlist the first two days of this week and I am still hooked. His lyrics are really on-point with subtle references and metaphors for extremely relevant problems. The sound is modern and fast-paced (in most songs) giving you a kick in the back in all senses possible. Addictive songs with catchy tunes and thought-provoking lyrics, can it get better? Yes, it can – his videos are giving even more depth to the meaning of his sons and the artwork supporting his release is just sick! It’s worth hearing him out, trust me.

This song, in particular, is definitely my favorite by the artist so far – lyrically it is super relevant and even slightly terrifying considering the topic. The video makes it even scarier and more impactful and makes you feel like you are watching the new installment of The Purge Series (with a very dramatic and relevant twist). The sound ranges from calm and steady to a point of being super aggressive and angry – it gradually builds up to become maddeningly loud and this fits the topic perfectly. Check it out!

2. Token – Code Red

This guy! Again, I’m putting this particular song because it made the strongest impression on me and got me hooked to the artist, but I sincerely recommend you check the other stuff out.

Token has the most well-controlled anger I have seen in an artist (okay, one of the most well-controlled let’s say). He has the speed, he has the flow, he has the lyrics, he has the story, and he has the video editor to make his art even stronger and more powerful. This guy is only 20 and he is already killing it with his lyrics, beats, and way of delivery.

This particular song is pure fire and even though it is hard to follow due to the speed it is a total banger which will blow your mind. Bonus points for the video here, the editing is amazing, the change of focus and all the effects which make it a picturesque metaphor. Elements from the style of Logic and NF are present to give birth to a totally different artist who is sure to blow up real soon. Get hyped with this one and let the shivers run down your spine while you listen!

3. Hilltop Hoods – Sell It All, Run Away

Hilltop Hoods are back with an album as strong as it should be and they managed to dominate the Aria charts and reach number one in just a few days. I am super happy to hear the new stuff – honestly it sounds just like any other Hilltop Hoods album, but the good thing is Hilltop Hoods have always made good, quality music. This is not an exception and the song from The Great Expanse are ranging from relaxing and happy tunes to serious and thought-provoking masterpieces with a complicated arrangement and sophisticated lyrical metaphors. And I highly respect that.

The whole album is definitely worth hearing in all its glory. It features classic Hilltop Hoods sounds, great lyrical content, amazing beats, and appearance of other Aussie legends like Illy, Ruel, Timberwolf, and many more.

The song, in particular is just an example of what you should expect and is one of my top tracks from The Great Expanse (alongside Fire and Grace; Into The Abyss; Exit Sign). For some reason, it brings back some really warm and comfortable feeling which I associate with the time I first heard the band – the sound and entire careless vibe of the song really reminds of the first tracks of the band. It’s a great feeling and the song is awesome in all possible terms – great lyrics, great beats, great vibe, interesting message. Check out the album, you are up for a treat.

4. James Blake – Where’s The Catch

This is one of the most diverse songs I have heard. It blends so many emotions and moods into one song with a transition which is admirably smooth. I was pleasantly surprised when I heard it and I have been addicted ever since.

The song starts with a melodic low-fi tone and has a super relaxing and cozy vibe (exactly as if taken from one of the “low-fi rainy day chill” playlists). There are some really intimate lyrics followed by a super catchy and rhythmic chorus which will probably hypnotize you and take you on an emotional adventure. Honestly, all of this strongly reminds me of Saturn Barz by Gorillaz both in terms of a combination of sounds, styles, vibe, and lyrical content. Also, I think the video of Saturn Barz (Spirit House) really captures the vibe and state in which the song leaves you. It’s an adventure for sure and maybe the association with the versatility and diversity of Gorillaz is what attracts me so much to this song. But don’t get me wrong it has it’s uniqueness and individuality which easily becomes present with the mesmerizing fast rap lines following the chorus. Interesting lyrics which sound amazing blended with the smooth low-fi beats and the fast rap. The song then goes back to its soothing sounds and relaxing melodies to conclude the journey on which it took you the past four minutes. I think, it’s a must hear and it will definitely put you into a state of relaxation and peace at least for a little bit.

5. Alec Benjamin – Saddest Song (Demo)

I really wanted to put this guy into last week’s post and after being introduced to this particular song I decided it is not a matter of postponing anymore. Alec Benjamin is an artist I discovered a while ago (once again thanks to the most amazing person ever) and I have been ocassionally returning to his songs every once in a while. He has an incredible voice and super emotional lyrics which he compliments with great melodies.

To be honest, this one is quite the sad (as the title suggests) song but it is therefore extremely real and influential. Alec Benjamin, in general, is an artist I find extremely personal and I believe his songs are usually dictated by pure emotions and personal experiences. The Saddest Song tells another one of his personal stories and makes you travel to his world and understand his pain very well. The storytelling is strong here and the simple melody supporting the heartfelt lyrics really contributes to the experience. The strongest part about this song is that I think we have all experienced what he is talking about in one way or another. Nevertheless, a great song and an artist who deserves lots of attention! Check him out. I also highly recommend If We Have Each Other – a great song and one of my personal favorites.

This concludes the weekly music fix for this week. I hope you enjoyed it and you find something of your liking here. Let me know if you do, hit me up with cool songs to talk about next week, and don’t forget to follow my playlists in Spotify and YouTube for weekly music suggestions.
