Challenge #3: Embarrassing Situations

One of the most interesting challenges you guys sent me was regarding embarrassing situations. This is something we all unavoidably encounter, some of us (me) more often than others. I cannot force myself to say there is an easy way to handle those, but we have to admit embarrassing situations can be a reason for a good laugh. So let me tell you how I handle them and tell you about a few of the most awkward situations I have been in.

I admit – I consider myself an awkward person and I end up in embarrassing situations way more often than I prefer. But to be honest, with the time I started getting used to them and I rarely suffer a post-traumatic depression weeks after the situation has passed and everyone has forgotten about it.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that I don’t want to sink into the ground or disappear forever after something embarrassing has happened and I still feel extremely stupid depending on the situation. But let’s admit one thing – those types of situations are a necessary part of life and make it a bit more interesting. So we might as well learn to laugh along and embrace them.

How I handle embarrassing situations?

I have been thinking about it after I received this challenge and I found out that I can put my reactions in several categories.

  • Wish I was dead/Want to sink into the ground

It has to be a really hardcore situation to make me feel like that. But to be honest, it has happened quite a lot of times already and the feeling (I am sure you all know it well) is not pleasant. Most of the situations I will tell you about in the next paragraph made me feel this way, it is just better to disappear in situations like this and never see the people who witnessed you. Of course, this is just a temporary feeling, but it is still uncomfortable to feel you did something so stupid you wish you were dead instead.

  • Pretend nothing happened and hope others laugh it off quickly

That’s something I do more and more. Sometimes I just don’t know how to react and just pretend nothing actually happened and hope that those who saw me will just laugh it off quickly and be merciful to me and my clumsiness/stupidity. I have to say it is a good method and even tho it is truly weird and my face is usually red since I have indeed embarrassed myself it is way better than hating yourself and wanting to disappear completely.

  • Try to be mature about it and remember that everyone makes mistakes

Which is quite similar to the above mentioned. Sometimes I just remind myself s*it happens and everyone encounters this type of situations. Regardless of who saw me, I try to remain sensible laugh a little bit, mention how embarrassing this was and just get over it immediately. Sometimes it just doesn’t work like this, but when it does it is a good feeling.

Some of the most embarrassing situations I have been into

  • Situation #1

I will probably always remember this one time I made myslef look like a thief thanks to my friend. This friend of mine lives one floor below me and often calls me asking if I can go down and check if he locked the door since he always forgets.

I always do it and it is always locked, of course. But one time he called, I went to check and the door was actually open. So, naturally, he told me to go in and find the spare key in the drawer in the living room. While I was digging through the stuff in the living room, trying to find the god damn key, his sister suddenly went out of the bathroom and saw me hectically taking stuff out of the drawer. If this isn’t awkward I don’t know what is. Certainly an example of a time I wanted to sink into the ground and never see my friend’s sister again.

  • Situation #2

Another extremely embarrassing moment was a very long time ago when my best friend’s uncle was visiting my father at home to help him with some work.

While they were talking in the living room I had to go to the bathroom and for some unknown reason, I decided to make sure and lock the door. So far so good, but when I finally decided to go out I found out that I couldn’t unlock the door. I tried to remain cool and tried unlocking it again several times, but I think I just made it worse. My panic and claustrophobia started kicking in and I soon started screaming for help and hitting the door trying to break out. Several seconds later, my best friend’s uncle just opened the door. Just like that. It wasn’t even locked. My desperate screams and cry for help are still a reason to keep avoiding this person and every time I see him I remember his cringed face and I imagine what he thought that day. Certainly, a time when I wished I was dead.

  • Situation #3

This actually happened recently. When I started going to the gym and I was trying out new equipment as if it wasn’t embarrassing enough to be a complete newbie and try to understand how things work I had to embarrass myself a little more. I was doing an exercise which I have no idea how to call so here is a picture of the machine I used:

I guess you can imagine what happened. I lost the rhythm and I just hit my head on the control panel of the machine, falling down and looking like a complete retard. Luckily there weren’t many people that day and only one of the four who were close to me laughed out loud. The others were polite enough or just had a really strong sense of laugh control. This was definitely a time when I just wanted to disappear, but I was too motivated to just go home and moved to the opposite part of the fitness instead. I didn’t get back to this machine for the rest of day tho, not a chance.

  • And some more examples

I think all the times I have been hit in the face with a ball during sports in school deserve an honorable mention. I distinctly remember one time we had P.E first thing in the morning and I got hit in the face during volleyball because I was too distracted and sleepy.

The times when I didn’t know which way to go and I ended up coming back from where I started and going the oppoiste direction. I swear I always feel the smirks on people’s faces.

And my favorite – not knowing how things work and ending up embarrassing myself while trying to find out. Because asking for help is too manistream.

Oh, and one time I got stuck on one of those old tall coat racks. It took my friends around 2 minutes of intense laughing to decide to help me get down. Good times!

But as I said, those types of situations are a necessary part of life and make it a bit more colorful so we might as well just learn to deal with it and not pay too much attention. Or even better – start appraciating it for changing our boring everyday lives. I do have a smile on my face remembering about all of those situations now and even tho some of them make me cringe I do laugh at it. So there is no point to feel bad when something like this happens, its a natural part of life, why not just embrace it and laugh it off.

Thanks a lot for reading and sending me those awesome challenges. I have a few more in the list and I will get to them as soon as possible so stay tuned! If you have more ideas and suggestions be sure to hit me up! What is the most embarrassing situation you have been into?
