Unusual rules royals have to follow when drinking a cup of tea – one thing to ‘never do’

The eyes of the world are on the Royal Family, and they are subject to many regulations and protocols to ensure they are coming across their best. Myka Meier, founder of New York-based Beaumont Etiquette, shared how royals have to do things a little differently to us commoners.

Myka trained under a member of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s household.

She appeared on Eyewitness News ABC7NY to share the correct protocol for drinking a cup of tea.

When sitting down for a royal occasion cuppa, royals are expected to use a cup, saucer and teaspoon.

The handle of the cup must be at three o’clock, with the spoon also on the saucer.

The cup and saucer must always remain on the table unless the royal needs to stand up, in which case they can pick it up.

While most of us non-royals hold our cups any which way, the Royal Family are apparently not allowed to do this.

Wrapping both hands around the cup would be frowned upon, or place a few fingers inside the handle.

Instead, royals must “pinch and support”, where the thumb meets the index finger and is supported by the middle finger on the cup handle. The rest of the fingers should be all tucked under.

DON’T MISS…

To support the cup and remain sturdy and free from spillages, Myka said that you can place two fingers on the base of the cup.

Elbows can’t be jutting out but must be kept firmly at the sides of the body.

As for stirring, this mustn’t be done clockwise or anti-clockwise but up and down in a 12 to 6 motion.

She added that “we don’t want to be making any noise”, so clinking a teaspoon against the china is a no go.

Just like drinking a cup of tea, sitting down is another tricky matter for the Royal Family.

According to the expert, royals must sit with their ankles together, so there are various sitting positions they cannot do.

Sitting with the legs crossed at the knee is a huge no-go, as is sitting with the knees turned in and ankles separate.

Preserving your modesty is key, so women tend to cross their legs at the ankles – Cambridge Cross – or the Duchess Slant – knees and ankles together, body slanted and facing forwards, with the palms down.
