Afghan Proverbs –

Afghanistan has a rich oral tradition of Proverbs. There are two official languages, Farsi (often called Dari) and Pashto. Both have proverbs that colourfully illustrate traditional wisdom. Here is a sample of proverbs in Farsi:

کوه هر قدر بلند باشد، سر خود راه دارد
Even the highest of mountains has a path to the top

(“Where there is a will there is a way”)

Drop by drop a river is formed

(An accumulation of small efforts can produce great results)

There is no rose without thorns

(Nothing comes without a cost)

The wheat is a little wet; the millstone a little dull

(Both sides must take some responsibility for a problem)

Guests are friends of God

I have previously posted about how much Afghans value hospitality.

If you would like to see more, one of the best compilations of Afghan Proverbs that I have found can be found here.
