Vallimalai Murugan Temple , Vellore

Arulmigu Ellaiamman Temple (Vallimalai Murugan Temple) is located at a distance of 23 km from Vellore (Chennai – Bangalore Highway). It is situated on the slopes of Javvadhu Hills and on  the slopes of Javvadhu Hills and On the banks of River Palar. They also told that Arulmigu Ellaiamman of Padavedu Ellaiamman are the same.

This temple is known for Subramaniyar temple, a Hindu temple for Murugan. Katpadi Junction Railway Station is the nearest railhead, which is about 5 km from Vellore town.

About Temple:

Subramanyar Temple is a rock cut hill temple located at Vallimalai near Vellore in Tamil Nadu. According to legends, Vallimalai is the place where Valli was born and married Muruga. Here, Valli is in the form of a playful maiden.There is the Thiruppugazh aashramam atop Vaḷḷimalai, where the tradition of Vaḷḷi lives on.

There are natural springs on the hill, which are associated with Valli. A flight of 300 steps lead to the temple which is place within a cave. The shrines of Vinayakar and Kasi Viswanathar are also here.

History of Vallimalai Murugan Temple:

The history of Vallimalai Murugan temple is great one. Lord Maha Vishnu‘s two daughters were Valli and Devayanai. One day they decide to search husband for them.Their wish to marry a husband, who will never get angry. So they prayed for that.

Suddenly Lord Murugan appeared before them. They requested Lord Murugan to marry them. But Lord Murugan said them that Devayanai will born to Indiran and Valli will born to Vedas in next generation. Then he promised that time he will marry them and disappeared.

Vaḷḷimalai is the place where Vaḷḷi, the daughter of Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi was born (via the sweat drop from Lakshmi that fell on the grass at this place, and later on consumed by a female deer, thereafter Vaḷḷi was born to the Deer). Narada muni recounted about Vaḷḷi to Murukaṉ. After that Murukaṉ went to see Vaḷḷi. After several vain attempts , finally with Lord Ganesha‘s help, Vaḷḷi and Murukaṉ are united. They elope from Vaḷḷimalai and get married, settle down at Thanigai (Thirutthani).

Vallimalai :

One has to climb 444 steps to reach this temple that is carve in a single rock. On the steps there are a number of resting mandapams. Out of the many canopies one of them is still not renovate. When they tried to renovate it, Mr. Arunachalam, Mr. Apathurai and Kripananda Variar tried to remove the stone.

When they had smoke incense smell coming from the chamber below the stone they had the vision of siddhas and rishis seated in yoga posture. All the three had a shock and became unconscious. From that time the stone closed and left it without renovation.

During the annual ten-day Valli Malai festival, after the Valli Tirumanam, all sumangalis (married women) are offer mangal sutra, kumkuma red vermilion and turmeric powder presented by Tiruppukazh Asramam.

Pongi Named for Valli:

One day while Vallimalai Satchidananda Swami was walking on the hill he met a little girl who sang Virakara Nokkiyam. Swamigal analysed it is valli and felt happy. They asked who are you?.

She said “”It does not matter who I am, but did you not feel very happy in your mind upon hearing my music?”. After that Swamigal start singing with raga and thala. So he named valli as pongi.

Morning 7 am to evening 6 pm.
