A partire dal 1965, Faustino Barrientos ha vissuto in solitudine lungo le rive del lago O’Higgins, tra Cile e Argentina. Come dimora ha costruito una casa usando un vecchio vascello da pesca ormai inutilizzabile.
Faustino ha vissuto di pastorizia per oltre 40 anni, con l’aiuto di ben poche comodità moderne. L’insediamento più vicino, Villa O’Higgins, è una piccola comunità di qualche centinaio di persone a circa 40 chilometri di distanza dalla sua casa.
Per raggiungere Villa O’Higgins, Barrientos deve intraprendere un viaggio di due giorni a dorso di cavallo, viaggio che intraprende solo una volta all’anno per vendere e acquistare bestiame.
Nel 2011, Vice ha girato un breve documentario sulla vita in isolamento di Faustino Barrientos, un uomo ormai ottantenne che si trova ad affrontare forze governative, economia, turismo e cambiamenti climatici che stanno modificando il territorio che ama.
