Here’s a Look At the 157 Emoji Arriving This Year

New Emojis that include a pirate flag, a teddy bear and lobster are coming later this year. On Wednesday, the Unicode Consortium offered a preview of the upcoming icons.

In total, 157 new emojis will be arriving on phones this August or September as part of the Emoji 11.0 release, the consortium said in a blog post. The new icons have been cataloged in this video from Emojipedia.

They include human male and female emojis with red hair, curly hair and white hair, all with different shades of skin. You can also pick ones that are bald.

New animals are also on the way. The latest emojis contain a mosquito, parrot, peacock, kangaroo and swan among several others.

The consortium also gave a thumbs up to a batch of superhero and supervillain emojis. However, they don’t depict any actual comic book characters. Rather they simply show a person dressed in a cape, uniform and eyemask. The images come in both genders and different skin tones.

However, the icons on display are all samples. Tech vendors may decide to change the icons to fit the overall design themes to their emojis. Google, for instance, created a ruckus when its cheeseburger emoji featured the cheese on top of the bottom bun. (Following complaints, the company later fixed the emoji.)

The Unicode Consortium is also accepting proposals for new emojis as part of the upcoming 12.0 release, which will arrive next year. The deadline for submission is this March.

The consortium, which is made up of major tech companies, serves as the emoji gatekeeper; it decides which icons should be incorporated in Unicode, a computer industry standard that deals with character encoding.
