There are several documents required when filing an application for Australian citizenship which prove you are eligible. You will first of all be required to provide the following:

• original documents of police certificates;
• scans of other original documents if your application is going to be submitted online;
• a certified copy of every document if you are submitting a paper form;
• all the information that will help a favourable outcome for your application.

Eligibility for Australian citizenship

To help to prove your eligibility for Australian citizenship you will be asked to provide Identity documents which include three documents that together show the following:

• your gender;
• your name at birth;
• your date of birth;
• official evidence showing any name changes;
• a photograph;
• a signature;
• your present residential address.

If you cannot provide sufficient proof of your identity you may be denied the right to citizenship. 

You will also be required to provide a complete birth certificate that reveals your parents’ names. If a birth certificate is unavailable you can provide a household or family registration document or any documents which you had before you arrived in Australia which together can confirm your identity from the day you were born.  

Documents that show proof of a name change include:

• an official marriage or divorce certification;
• a change of name document from the Australian Register of Births, Deaths & Marriages, or if relevant an overseas authority;
• a photograph with signature.

Examples of Identity Documents include:

• an Australian driver’s licence;
• pages are taken from a passport  which should include personal details, photo, passport issue date and expiry date;
• a national identity card
• a UNHCR document;
• aircrew identity documents;
• seafarers’ identity documents;
• military identity documents;
• proof of age ID card;
• a student card;
• residential address evidence.

 Home address documentation can include:

• gas, electricity or water bill;
• rates notice;
• a rental contract;
• a bank statement;
• evidence showing arriving in Australia.

Documents showing entry into Australia include:

• current or past passport;
• a travel document which includes a visa, like a Document for Travel to Australia, PLO56 (M56);
• proof of entry date;
• passenger list which can be sourced through the National Archives of Australia.

Use of the Commonwealth children’s migration scheme

If you arrived in Australia without either of your parents request from the Child Migrants Trust a letter which indicates you arrived from 22nd September 1947 to 31st December 1967, and you came via the Commonwealth Child Migration Scheme.

You should fill in Form 1195 Identity Declaration if you intend to apply online. Every person included with your application will need confirmation of identity. If you are applying on paper you need to complete the identity declaration found on the citizenship application form.

Identity documents required for children below 15 years of age

Documents are required for all dependent children included in the application, and if a child is applying on his or her own. 

Each child will need to provide the following documents:

1. A full birth certificate revealing parent’s details;
2. A passport or official travel document;
3. Proof of name, if applicable;
4. A passport-size photo;
5. ID declaration signed by an Australian citizen who is entitled to perform this task.

Proving eligibility for Australian Citizenship

Documents are required which assess good character. These can include:

Police clearance certificates from all countries you have resided in for more than 12 months outside of Australia since you were granted a permanent visa. You also require an overseas police clearance certificate from all countries including the home country, where more than ninety days have been spent since turning 18 years.

Australian National Police Checks

Anyone over the age of 16 years will need to be checked by the National Police Checking Service.
