Skoda Auto, the Indian subsidiary of  the renowned Volkswagen Group-owned Czech carmaker Skoda, recently launched the Skoda Kodiaq 7-seater SUV. This latest offering from the Skoda has gone on sale at an ex-showroom price of Rs 34.49 lakh. The Skoda Kodiaq not only rivals the  Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour but also premium crossovers such as the  BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA. There can be a very interesting comparison between the Q3 and the Kodiaq. Both these models are from the Volkswagen owned companies and share the globally-well known 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine. The Kodiaq is a clear winner here because of it’s pricing. It offers more features, at a lesser price. Even though the higher price of the Audi Q3 can be justified because of it’s brand image, considering simply the price, the Skoda Kodiaq is a clear winner here.

Skoda Kodiaq vs Audi Q3 Comparison- Specifications

The Q3 has a clear edge here. First of all, it offers a petrol engine variant, which is something that is conspicuous by its absence on the Kodiaq. Secondly, its the Diesel engine which is considerably more powerful than that of the latest Czech offering. Apart from this, the Q3 is at least 300 KGs lighter. All this implies  that the smaller SUV here ends up offering a much higher performance. It also offers a 7-speed DSG and a 4×4.

Skoda Kodiaq vs Audi Q3 Comparison- Mileage

In the table above we have taken into account mileage of only the Diesel Q3 in this comparison here. This is because the latest SUV from Skoda doesn’t offer a petrol variant. Coming to the Diesel engines of the two models, it’s the Audi Q3 here that has a considerably more powerful engine. Both the cars have the same engine but in a different state of tune. While the Audi gets more power, the fuel mileage is only very marginally lesser. This is primarily because the  newer model here is at least 300 KGs heavier than all the trims of the Audi Q3.

Skoda Kodiaq vs Audi Q3 Comparison- Dimensions

The Kodiaq is clearly a larger car. The latest model from the Czechoslovakian car manufacturer is much longer, wider as well as taller than the German rival. The most important bit here is that the the Kodiaq offers a seating capacity of seven. Whereas in comparison, the Q3 has a seating capacity of only five. That said, quite obviously the Q3’s boot space, at 420-litres, is much bigger than the 270-litres of the Kodiaq. A point to be noted here is that you can always fold the last two seats of the Kodiaq to free up a lot more space. So there is no doubt that the Kodiaq is the clear winner in this part of the comparison.

Both the cars offer a very long list of features. Both the models in question here come with features like a electric tailgate, touchscreen infotainment system and keyless entry with push-button start/stop. That said the Audi Q3 misses out on cornering lights, headlamp washers and even paddle shifts. These are some big omissions for a car that costs so much more higher than the Kodiaq. Hence, the Kodiaq has a slight edge in this part of the cometition.

The Skoda Kodiaq receives the Skoda Connect touchscreen infotainment system which has features such as WiFi, Google Earth, etc. Apart from  this, the infotainment unit also provides Android Auto connectivity and Apple CarPlay. Some Other primary features include  umbrella holders, electric tailgate, dual-zone automatic climate control, start/stop button and an electric adjustment system for the front seats.

Skoda Kodiaq vs Audi Q3 Comparison- Safety features

The new Skoda Kodiaq 7-seater SUV comes with some great safety features. The car offers state of the art modern safety features like  adaptive cruise control, electronic stability control and Skoda’s multi-collision braking. Multi Collision Brake is a system that applies the brakes automatically to mitigate  or prevent a subsequent impact when the vehicle has been involved in a collision. When the airbag is fired in response to a collision, information is sent to the the electronic stability control system to brake the vehicle automatically. The Skoda Kodiaq also comes with  auto light assist, traffic jam assist, blind spot detection, hill-hold control, nine airbags, tire pressure monitoring and ABS with EBD.

Even the Audi Q3 has a lot of safety features. The primary ones  include as many as six airbags, brake assist, vehicle stability control, hill-hold assist and ABS with EBD. It also offers ISOFIX child seat anchors. Comparing the Audi Q3 with the Skoda Kodiaq in terms of airbags, the Audi  offers only six airbags in comparison to the 9 airbags available on the Kodiaq. The AUdi Q3 also misses out on some important features such as cornering headlamps and fully retractable seat belt for the middle rear passenger.

Skoda Kodiaq vs Audi Q3 Comparison- Verdict

Price- The Kodiaq has a definite price advantage over the Audi Q3 . No doubt the Q3 offers a more powerful engine. That said,  even the Skoda boasts of a 4×4 system. It  offers more features as well. Many of you might belive that the Q3 justifies the higher price tag because of Audi’s brand image. That is true to be honest. However, putting the brand image aside, the Kodiaq offers much more value for money.

Specifications- Both the models boast of a 4×4 system. But the Q3 is more powerful. It is also about 300 KGs lighter than the Kodiaq.  These factors lead to a  better on-road performance. The Q3 is a clear winner when it comes to specifications.

Mileage-  Although by a small margin, the Kodiaq is the winner here. The primary reason for this is it is much heavier than the German rival. Despite having a less powerful engine, it ends up with  only a slightly more fuel efficiency.

Dimensions- The Kodiaq is  wider, longer, and taller than the Q3. It’s clearly a much biggerr car.

Features-  The Kodiaq not only offers more convenience and comfort features but also offers more safety equipment. Hence the Kodiaq is the clear winner here.

VERDICT- If we keep the brand image of the Audi Q3 aside, the Kodiaq is a clear winner here. It is a much more value for money proposition. Our verdict declares the Skoda Kodiaq as the winner, but yes keeping the brand images of the Audi aside.
