European auto manufacturer PSA Group re-entered the Indian market once again, after Peugeot and this time with the official debut of French Carmaker Citroen, to bring their first car – the Citroen C5 Aircross on Indian roads.

The PSA Group has been making headlines in Indian automobile sector since the beginning of January, and soon they collaborated with CK Birla Group for developing business in India. Although this is not the first entry of a PSA Group company in India, as the European auto major already sold the Peugeot retailed cars in until the late 90s in India with the Peugeot 309 being the last entry. Almost two decades after ending sales, the PSA Group re-entered the Indian market and chose the French car manufacturer Citroen for its official second inning in India.

Citroen, which will make its debut in one of the largest automobile markets in world, confirmed that the C5 Aircross SUV will be its first vehicle launch in India and will be available for buying by September 2020. C5 Aircross was globally launched in Sanghai in April 2017, and is based on Groupe PSA’s EMP2 platform that also forms the basis of the DS 7 Crossback, the Peugeot 3008 and the Vauxhall Grandland X. The details of variants for India are not specified by the company yet, but C5 Aircross comes with the option of one petrol and two diesel engines – a 130hp, 1.2-litre turbo-petrol, a 130hp, 1.5-litre turbo-diesel and an 180hp, 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine.

For PSA, they opted for Citroen over Peugeot because the former has a more ‘stand-out’ portfolio – and a rather mid-range brand will make sure they hit the mass market segments; unlike the premium segment covered by Peugeot. And Citroen opted for C5 Aircross simply because it’s their latest and their flagship, and they wanted to give India the best they have.
