On Monday, President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the Padma Awards for the year 2019 to 47 prominent personalities for their excellence in their work, and the contribution to the nation and/or society.

Christened as the highest civilian Award of India, the Padma awards 2019 function was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Monday to bestow the honours to individuals for their works. A total of 47 prominent personalities from different fields such as arts, literature, sports, medicine etc. were awarded the Padma awards. In presence of PM Modi’s special attendance, President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the awards three categories: the Padma Vibhushan, the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Shri awards to all 46 awardees.

The list of this year’s Padma awards winners run down from Malayalam actor Mohanlal – to  former CISCO CEO John Chambers; former foreign secretary S Jaishankar to dancer and producer Prabhu Deva; from Akali Dal leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa to  journalist Kuldip Nayar (posthumous) and former Bihar leader Hukumdev Narayan Yadav. Late actor Kader Khan (posthumous), Viswanathan Mohanlal, Dhindsa and Nayar (posthumous) were awarded with the Padma Bhushan award.

As many as 50,000 names were received for the online nomination rounds that were held in 2016 – which was 20 times more than 2014’s record of just 2200 nominations. From this amount, a total of 112 winners of the Padma were announced on Republic Day for receipt of this year’s Padma awards, and the remaining awardees will receive their honours in a ceremony held on March 16. All the Padma recipients this year come from all segments, all over the country and are recognised “based on the larger impact and selfless service”, rather than just excellence in the work.
