Observing the Aero India 2019 air show’s women’s day, the ace badminton player PV Sindhu flew high in the sky as she co-piloted the HAL’s indigenously made Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Fighter Jet in Bangalore on Saturday.

The ongoing military cum civilian air show organised by Indian Air Force and Ministry of Defence observed women’s day at the expo today, to showcase women’s achievements in the aerospace sector. Three of the women IAF fighter pilots roared the Bangalore skies with the Hawk-I advanced jet trainer of BAE Systems PLC and an upgraded version of the Russian-made MiG-21. And with regard to women’s day, India’s ace badminton player PV Sindhu was invited by DRDO to participate in the expo and co-pilot the Tejas Fighter Jet.

The flight was captained by Wing Commander Sidharth Singh in the front seat flying the aircraft for most of sortie. During the flight, Singh made all the manoeuvres, loops and rolls in air; and carried out some attacks at a dam nearby. The wing commander said that Sindhu “quickly adapt to the height and speed” and even “flew for about 5 minutes herself”. Waving off as Sindhu climbed the “Made in India” fighter jet, she became the one of the youngest to co-pilot the HAL-manufactured Tejas Fighter jet.

Speaking about the experience, Sindhu said, “It was definitely a great experience, great opportunity and I am really honoured. Special thanks for DRDO for making this happen. Women’s Day celebrations at the expo gave me this opportunity and will definitely remember this forever”.

Besides this, an all-women crew flew the Dornier and Avro aircrafts and participated in panel discussions at the expo on Saturday. Women playing significant roles in the armed forces, especially in the air defence sector were felicitated at the event, and a book and film on ‘Women in Aviation’ was released today.
