The world’s only known albino orangutan is set free in remote Borneo Jungle in Indonesia after she was found starving and dehydrated in an Indonesian village in April last year. She was named ‘Alba’ after thousands worldwide responded to an appeal for her name. Alba means “white” in Latin and “sunrise” in Spanish. Thankfully she has tripled her weight since she was rescued by Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF).

She was suffering from symptoms of Albinism which may have caused her poor eyesight, and poor hearing sense and susceptibility to skin cancer which could have made her more vulnerable to the predators. But, after the proper treatment and care from the Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Center, Alba has recovered successfully and she has thrived in her climbing and socialization skills. During the care at the rehabilitation canter, she was not alone.

She formed a special bond with Kika, who is another rescued female orang-utan. After she recovered properly and made sure of her great health, she was released into a suitable location in the Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park along with her friend Kika after a long and tough journey which included boating and hiking. After the release, Alba is safe and possess a strong physical condition and intrinsically wild behavior, as it should be. Alba will be monitored by the foundation’s Post-Release Monitoring (PRM) team to ensure her health and safety.

She is roaming freely in the jungle and jumping over the canopies of the forest over 35 meters (115 feet) according to their initial monitoring. According to the BOS Foundation, they have released over 100 orangutans into this forest where Alba and Kika are released. Let’s just hope that both the orangutans live free from nowon and be safe from the predators.
