Indian scholars tend to move abroad for better quality education and career opportunity, hence, draining out the country’s brains out of the country. In a bid to plug the brain drain, the Union Cabinet has approved the Prime Minister Research Fellowships (PMRF). Under this program, the government will provide scholarship for students of Higher Education Institutions like the IITs, IISERs and NITs, which will also be the country’s most Lavish Paid Scholarships to date. Lavish it is because the PMRF includes a monthly scholarship of Rs 80,000 and an annual research grant of Rs 2 lakh for selected scholars of doctorate level.

Under this scheme, the students who have completed or are in final year of B.Tech or integrated M.Tech or M.Sc in science and technology streams at IISc, IITs, NITs, IISERs, IIITs will be offered direct admissions in PhD programmes in IITs and IISc. However, it is certainly not for all because the eligibility criteria will filter out most of the mass even from the premium institutions of India. The minimum eligibility for aspirants will be a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 8.5 and students will be selected after the launch of PMRF program in 2018-19.

For this lavish scholarship program, the government will be spending a massive Rs 1650 crore in a span of three years. A huge amount because the human resources ministry of India believes that the scheme will go a long way in for students of higher education institutions like the IITs, IISERs and NITs, which will also be the country’s most lavish paid scholarships to date. Plugging talent in highly educated mass will ensure that talented brainpower stays in the country and ultimately contribute in development of the nation which is on the mission to become a world superpower.
