Free, uninterrupted, snag-free electric power supply was just a long-seen dream for the rural areas of India, from where the agricultural production is centred. The dream has been fulfilled by the Telangana state government as they announced free uninterrupted power supply to the farm sector to become the first State in the country to do so. The announcement was made on the first day of 2018 by Chairman and Managing Director of the TS-Genco/Transco D. Prabhakar and his counterpart of the Southern Power Distribution Company G. Raghuma Reddy on the farm fields of Chintala Venkat Reddy at Pothayipally village in Shamirpet mandal of Medchal-Malkajgiri district.

Although there are few states which provide free supply, but that is limited to just few hours, and some other States the sector is being given 24-hour power with tariff. So Telangana has booked its name in Indian history to become the first state to provide 24 hours’ free electricity to Farming Sector. As many as 23 lakh agricultural pump sets received free electricity as the new year bell rang and the 9,034 MW power was consumed and the consumption of energy is expected to be around 190-195 million units. The government believes that this will push the overall power demand to 11,000 MW by March this year.

The entire project was completed by setting up new power lines, transformers and sub-stations, the state power utilities have made elaborate arrangements for power supply. So in recognition to the great services rendered by the electricity employees, a special increment will be given from January 1, 2018. This initiative was well received by the farmers, as they can judiciously utilize the electric resources for better agricultural outputs and the people who worked for setting up this system get appreciation too.
